John Lassiter, a close friend and informal adviser of McCrory who began working with him in Charlotte government in the mid-1980s, remains hopeful about McCrory’s chances Tuesday. He said he expected voters would “wake up” at the end of the campaign, and decide to vote for the person they supported previously.
“It’s really unfair,” Lassiter said. “He is very conservative, particularly on fiscal matters and the role of government. At his core, his politics are pretty tried and true, and he has stuck to those despite the trade winds that come every cycle.”
Lassiter, whom McCrory tapped to oversee and privatize the state’s economic development efforts, said McCrory is “pretty aligned with people like Thom Tillis,” the U.S. senator who was speaker of the North Carolina House when McCrory was governor.
Tillis, for his part, called McCrory a “business conservative.” Having one’s Republican credentials called into question is par for the course, he added.
"Primaries do that,” Tillis said. “They portray me as a liberal. The two things they do is cast you as a RINO or too liberal, and corrupt. Neither of those are true for him.”

Their own article aligns Pat McCrory with Thom Tillis.
Tillis has a Conservative Review Liberty Score of 49%
Ted Budd’s score is 88%
One is a conservative. One isn’t.
These article authors are totally clueless when it comes to conservatism, and will continue to be.
Flanked by Paul ‘Weinermobile’ Ryan and Pierre Delecto ..... nah ... couldn’t be a RINO ... Naw...
I’ll assume an outsider type business man won the presidency and had wild success making the lifer politician from NC jealous and petty.
They’re not clueless.
They know the truth and they know what they are doing.
They’re lying!
I love how they use the term “most conservative”...as if that person could NEVER change who they are or their leanings!
HE IS A POLITICIAN, which means he leans whichever way the money blows in from!! PERIOD!
When they are described as “economicly” conservative, you know they are a rino.
He had a chance of starting his own MAGA movement before Trump, but Obama and the NCAA threatened him for not letting boys in the girl’s restroom and he folded like a cheap polyester travel suit, and lost his re-election to any Democrat the DNC put on the ballot.
Tillis, Burr, and McCrory are the epitome of the Bush/Rockefeller/McConnell/Ryan country club establishment. Calling themselves conservatives at election time they govern as moderate to liberal accommodators of the big state agenda. Massive tax cuts for big business and wealthy donors, legislation for special interest, and continued funding for failed leftist social programs. Any pretense of fiscal responsibility is long gone.
McCrory lost his reelection bid for governor in 2016 by a small margin. He ran an incredibly weak defensive campaign against a well financed leftist Democrat Attorney General who successfully positioned himself as a moderate. Pat McCrory let now Governor Cooper define himself and define McCrory.
Looking at the vote McCrory lost the vote in the suburban counties north of Charlotte. Why? Instead of spending state and federal highway funds to widen Interstate 77 north of Charlotte, he contracted with a foreign company to widen the road and operate toll lanes. The McCrory toll road increased costs for commuters and they responded at the polls by swinging the vote in the precincts along I-77 enough to give Cooper the victory.
North Carolina has one of the highest gasoline taxes in the nation so securing funds for the project, and allowing a key interstate highway to remain non-toll, was possible. In fact, McCrory’s administration had funded the widening of the other major highway running north from Charlotte, I-85, with state highway funds.
Prior to entering politics McCrory was an executive at Duke Energy, the major provider of electricity and natural gas in the state. During his tenure as governor Duke was under attack by environmentalists because some of the poorly designed coal ash depositories, from its old coal fired generating plants, were leaking hazardous chemicals into some of the state’s waterways. The Democrats and environmentalists were successful in putting McCrory on the defensive on the coal ash issue during his reelection campaign, labeling him a tool of his former employer. Once again instead of fighting with a tough plan to correct the coal ash problem, Pat McCrory allowed the left to define the issue, define, him, and portray him as an accomplice in environmental destruction.
To a large degree McCrory got a bad rap on coal ash. He was not involved in the company decisions regarding coal ash storage. However he was responsible for how he responded to the allegations and the decision to play defense, instead of offense, was his.
The reality is the Democrats want to run against McCrory in order to pick up a Senate seat in the fall. They know he will run a gentlemanly defensive RINO campaign when they go on the attack. McCrory has demonstrated he doesn’t have the spine to run an offensive campaign and call his opponents out for who they are. He prefers defeat with “honor” to going on the attack.
The future of the Republic is in peril. The barbarians have breached the gates and are wreaking destruction throughout the land. Republicans, in the mold of Pat McCrory don’t understand there can be no negotiation with people who are intent on destroying our culture, our institutions and our lives. He is not a fighter and if he should squeak out a victory in the primary will likely go down to defeat in the fall election with a smile, proud that he didn’t get down in the mud.
Bllleeeeeechhhhhhhh!

This nailed it.
I heard what mccrory was saying about the jan. 6th protesters. I’ll not vote for him again UNLESS it is in an election against ANY dim-0.
Is he “severely conservative” like Kittens?

“It’s amazing what having an unlimited checkbook can do to public opinion,” Burr told POLITICO, adding that McCrory “has always been a conservative.”
When you have to go to Politico to convince people you’re not a RINO/liberal...something ain’t right.
Love that picture.
These assistant democommies need to be defeated.
At all costs.
It is going to be painful, and may go against our very instincts.
But, it has to be done.
bush league chamber of commerce worshiping republiCAN’Ts need to be politically slaughtered.
At all costs.
Do not qualify your statement with “ I will not vote for him except”....
DO NOT VOTE FOR HIM!!!
PERIOD!!!!
we have been handed a golden opportunity here.
biteme is sooooo bad, that almost anyone with an r next to their name has a well above chance of being elected.
We can purge the party of them, and still win enough seats to get a majority in at least 1 house.
McCrory - we don’t need more Dems who wear R jerseys.Go Budd
I wanted to Primary Burr out. He retired though.
Tillis is a disappointment. Squishy on amnesty.
McCrory? only if he’s the General election candidate.
Voting for Budd.
