GOP panics over ‘ultra-MAGA’ Pennsylvania Senate wild card
Axios ^ | May 11, 2022 | Jonathan Swan

Influential Republicans in Washington and among the nationwide party elite are having a belated "oh s--t" moment over the previously unimaginable prospect that Kathy Barnette could win their party's nomination for the open Senate seat in Pennsylvania.

Why it matters: In Barnette, who's been soaring in the polls ahead of Tuesday's primary, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell would be dealing with a general election candidate who'd be an opposition researcher's dream — potentially endangering the GOP effort to take back the Senate.

Barnette was anti-Trump in 2015, but then again some people at the time thought he was a Democrat in Republican clothing (which turned out not to be true). But even in those early Tweets she said she was conservative.

The major three all talk a good game.

It’s a tough call to predict how they would turn out even in the first year.

Best to go with the non-GOPee supported one to poke the PTB in the eye.

Not a Pennsylvania voter, but I too am rooting for her. She’s got a resume that makes me think she’s capable of doing a good job as a Senator. And it’s looking like Pennsy voter are catching on the how bad a choice “Dr. Oz” would be.

The downside is the she will be stabbed in the back by the GOPe, making it hard to run a campaign in the general.

The GOP Establishment is really getting desperate twitting false accusations. I wonder what Micheal Flynn thinks about Ric Grenell now. Flynn endorsed Kathy.

Go Kathy!!!

It does seem they are going all in here.. which is comical...

had one of the also rans drop out today... less than a week before the voting.. wonder what kickbacks they are promising these guys to do it..

Names are on the ballot already.. so pulling out will likely have little impact...

There are a couple of nicely-made points about the political stakes in this race.

I would like to see more about the obvious costs of running “Outrage Ads” for Republicans.

Barnette has moved in the polls by making herself seem sympathetic, decent, human and real. Her primary opponents (better funded and presumably better advised) have made themselves look harder and uglier by their ad programs.

I’ve seen this happen a dozen times in Virginia. There is a point of diminishing returns for negative ads. A lot of politics is just presenting yourself as a nice person (like Youngkin in my state).

I’m tired of Republicans trying to make their opponents look bad at the cost of making themselves look mean. This is particularly true of primary contests, of course.

She’s got a resume that makes me think she’s capable of doing a good job as a Senator.

What would that be? I’ll vote for her if she’s the nominee, but she’s got the weakest resume I’ve seen for a political candidate in years.
