Sinn Féin will be the largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly for the first time, pushing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) into second place.
Sinn Féin has 27 seats, compared to the DUP's 25.
The result means Michelle O'Neill will be entitled to become first minister - unprecedented for a nationalist.
Earlier, Ms O'Neill said it had been an election of "real change" and a "defining moment for our politics and for our people".
"Today ushers in a new era which I believe presents us all with an opportunity to reimagine relationships in this society on the basis of fairness, on the basis of equality and on the basis of social justice," she continued.

Is Northern Ireland like the Donbas region? Do Britain and Ireland need to fight over who really has sovereignty over it?
It’s quite sad. Sinn Fein is a far-left, culturally and economically marxist party. They’re a negative force both within NI and the Republic of Ireland. As an older generation of supporters who were simply single-issue “Brits out” have died off, the baton has been passed to younger generation with politics virtually indistinguishable from that of the AOCs/Ilhan Omars of our country or the Marxist parties of Latin America. SF’s electoral success isn’t going to be a good thing.
No, it’s not like that. There’ll be no fight like that. The truth is that, despite official positions to the contrary, deep down neither the Republic of Ireland nor the British government really wants Northern Ireland at all.
In modern Ireland the choices are between “Left”, “Far Left” and “Would You Like Chips With Your Blintzes, Comrade O’Stalin?”
CC
Indeed. It’s a place where someone with the politics of perhaps Nancy Pelosi or Dementia Joe Biden constitutes the *right* wing.
I’ve heard that a fair number of Catholics in N.I. who oppose abortion, LGBT, cultural marxism etc, actually vote for the hardline protestant DUP.
Which party is Sinn Fein going to make a coaltion with, and will they have a true majority?
I'm glad the founders of the USA designed the Constitution to be two political parties.
Most Irish people in America seem absolutely unaware of the ideologies of Irish parties. Sinn Fein is communist, but I’ve known of plenty of Irish Republicans (U.S. sense of the word) who supported them, including the parents of an ex-gf who worked in the Nixon administration.
“I’m glad the founders of the USA designed the Constitution to be two political parties.”
Read the Federalist Papers. Most of the founding fathers deplored “factions” and opposed political parties.
There is no party system designed into the Constitution. It evolved over time. Unfortunately today neither of our political parties support the founder’s vision of a small central government, with limited ability to restrict the freedom of citizens. The Constitution provides for most governing to be done at the state and local level. Today we have two parties supporting a centralized government wielding control over the lives of every citizen.
The fate of the January six protestors, and the silence of both political parties, is proof neither party supports individual liberty and sees government responsible for protecting the natural rights of citizens. Both parties advocate a powerful central government controlling the lives of citizens and allocating economic resources. The founders would consider both parties tyrannical today.
I agree.
Agreed. Very sad
“Now two of the four UK nations have breakaway political parties at the top.”
One consequence of Brexit is for the first time it is just the UK nations on their own. Since the UK was formed it either had the British Empire or the EU as an outlet. People who were dissatisfied could leave. Now everyone is stuck together on a couple small islands and it will be hard to keep together.
I agree. I have family on the Shankill Road. However, this is all on the Unionist Parties and their inability to come together to provide Unionist voters one choice. Unionist parties actually got more votes than SFIRA. But because the Unionist vote is diluted between the DUP, UUP, PUP, TUV and more recently Alliance (which bills itself as a cross community party, but bends over for SFIRA every chance it gets)
Basically if you’re a leftist Nationalist, you have one choice SFIRA. If you’re to the right or a Unionist, there are five parties your vote can go to. Therein, lies the issue. No Surrender!!
