"Working on the Railroad" Yeah, me, too. We sang that and many more American heritage songs in elementary and junior high. Those were so great. I still love "Working on the Railroad" and "Home on the Range." We took long car trips every two years from upstate New York to visit many relatives in the West and those songs always conjured up images of the west in me.

Canned Heat — I haven’t heard of them in decades. I loved their first album in high school and college. I remember “Let’s Work Together.” Great song!

We had a small, intimate teen venue like that in the western suburbs of St. Louis. They were able to book acts that hadn’t yet hit the big time. I remember seeing Tod Rundgren and Nazz! there around 1968. The psychedelic-tinged garage rock outfit had just released their debut album with “Hello It’s Me” on it which didn’t become a smash hit until Rundgren re-recorded it for his 1972 solo album “Something/Anything?”

Despite the 1958 recession, these two guys found employment doing similar tasks. Smokey Robinson (of the Miracles) didn't like his job, but James Sheppard (of the Heartbeats) loved his.
