According to some around here, Churchill was a natural born citizen because he had an American mother.
Curiously Congress appears to have not been aware of that as they bestowed “honorary” citizenship on him in the 1950’s.
They’re wrong Churchill wasn’t a citizen of the United States, at anytime in his lifetime.(Hence the honorary award)
However, from a historical perspective we have strong relationships with the people of Britain, Scotland, Ireland, France, & Germany. People from those countries & our country have intermingled for centuries.(Canada & Mexico should be acknowledged, as two other countries we have a special relationship with)
Winston Churchill my hero!
“...they bestowed “honorary” citizenship on him in the 1950’s.” [Lurkinandloomin, post 27]
Honorary US citizenship was conferred upon Sir Winston Spencer Churchill by President Kennedy in a ceremony in the Rose Garden of the White House in DC on 9 April 1963. He acted under Congressional authority, complying with the very first resolution by the US Congress to so honor a foreign national.
It was televised; Sir Winston and his wife Clementine watched on an early satellite link. They had hoped to reply the same way but technical difficulties precluded it.
