How to ask a seatmate to mask: The new etiquette for maskless flights
Washington Post ^ | 05/04/2022 | Nathan Diller

In the weeks since a federal judge in Florida struck down the federal mask mandate for planes and other transportation settings, Americans have met the change with a mix of excitement and concern. Some travelers welcomed the news, even cheering on planes when pilots announced the ruling. For others, the prospect of flying with unmasked seatmates has been a source of anxiety.

The Justice Department said it would appeal the decision, but the rule has been dropped for the time being. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends wearing a mask on flights.

If you are nervous about flying on an aircraft full of bare faces, you can take steps to make the journey less daunting. Below, psychology and etiquette experts offer advice on how to calm your nerves and courteously navigate a maskless flight.

While you might need to travel by plane for weddings or funerals, Thomas Plante, a psychology professor at Santa Clara University, said travelers might consider doing a cost-benefit analysis on whether to fly for pleasure trips. “I think the public really does want to say to themselves, ‘Okay, what am I willing to do and not do?’” he said. “‘What’s worth it and not worth it?’”

Before your trip, make a plan, said Andrea Bonior, a psychologist and Georgetown University faculty member who has contributed to The Washington Post. “I don’t think rehearsing is too much in this situation,” she said. Think about how many masks you will bring and how you will eat and drink if you don’t want to do so on the plane, and build in extra time to further reduce stress.

If wearing a mask makes you feel safer, Plante said, you can wear a quality one, such as an N95 or KN95, regardless of what others choose...

Please put on a mask for me. I have an extra one if you need it.
No thanks, I follow the advice of Dr. Fauci who said a mask is ineffective against a virus. Then he said it was effective. Then a few months later he said it wasn't necessary ... so I've decided to follow that version of his ever-changing advice."

Oh, I think you’re going to want me to wear this mask after I ate all those garlic fries.
I'm sure I'll be able to smell your fetid breath no matter how many masks you wear because the mask you're wearing, improperly so, I might add, isn't sealed. It's not going to keep odors in or keep the virus out. Besides, I'm not the one who is sick here.

I got a neighbor across the street that hasn’t been outside maskless in over two years. A really nice older black gentleman, but he never goes out without a mask and has taken every shot and booster available. The last time I spoke with him a couple of weeks ago he was very upset with Russia’s actions on Ukraine. Hopefully he takes the thing off when he goes inside.

It seems to me that black people are more likely to mask up than white people. And Oriental people are most likely to be masked.

Just like this...

Oh you’re afraid are you? Then you should definitely wear a mask. I’m not afraid, and I’m not required to wear a mask. If you’re uncomfortable with that ask the staff to move you to a different seat. That is your option. I’m reading my book now.

thank you for your cooperation.

When I am forced to wear a mask, I end up coughing uncontrollably. I think fibers of cotton or paper get in my lungs.

The coughing really freaks out the folks who insisted I mask up.

I’ve had three flights since, two of those the day after or day of, depending on how you count.

First flight, no masks, no remarks, as if there never was a mandate. Second flight out of Charlotte, crew was masked and pilot announced to be courteous to the masked. I figured crew-by-crew variation. Plenty of frightened people out there, and many of them are professionals otherwise. Anyway, on that flight, maybe 10% of PAX were wearing masks.

If a person sat next to me on a plane and insisted on a mask I would have fun with it.

It seems to me that black people are more likely to mask up than white people.

And half of them are wearing their masks under their chin.

I don't get this.

A healthcare professional once asked me if I was being careful to wear my muzzle everywhere.

I showed the box my muzzles came in.

The box had a NOT FOR USE IN HEALTHCARE SETTINGS warning on it.

The HCP never bugged me about muzzling again.

How to ask a seatmate to mask

Don't. That's my advice to anyone I'm forced to sit next to for a flight.

I flew a couple weeks before the mandate ended. I removed my mask ten minutes in to eat something. Kinda forgot to put it on. On the plane, through the airport and on the shuttle bus.

“Yes.”

“That’s private. I don’t see what that has to do with my politely asking you to wear a mask on the flight out of consideration for others?”

“Apparently you did vote for Xiden. Else you wouldn’t have asked me to wear a mask. Like all demonikraps, you are not to be trusted. Leave me alone.”
