Ukraine accused Russia of blackmailing Europe over energy in an attempt to break its allies, as fighting heads into a third month without Russia capturing a major city
WARSAW/SOFIA/KYIV — Russia halted gas supplies to Poland under the Yamal contract on Wednesday, data from the European Union network of gas transmission operators showed, in a deepening of the rift between the West and Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Bulgaria, like Poland a NATO and EU member, said earlier that Russia would also halt supplies of gas to it.
Ukraine accused Russia of blackmailing Europe over energy in an attempt to break its allies, as fighting heads into a third month without Russia capturing a major city.
Poland’s gas supply contract with energy giant Gazprom is for 10.2 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year, and covers about 50% of national consumption.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on “unfriendly” countries to pay for gas imports in roubles, a demand only a few buyers have implemented.
“The ultimate goal of Russia’s leadership is not just to seize the territory of Ukraine, but to dismember the entire center and east of Europe and deal a global blow to democracy,” Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said late on Tuesday.

Yes, but that doesn’t explain how it is an American problem.
If we’ve learned anything recently its poll results don’t suffice as evidence.
The chinkers and the ruskies KNOW that — which is why “green” energy is being pushed here — so they can hog the real energy for themselves.

I think he does do a few things on principle. He’s a RussiaFirst autocrat. He’ll do what is in Russia’s interest, steal his neighbor’s oil and kill tens of thousands of potential border enemies, that kind of thing. He acts on principle when the principle at play is being a bully & getting away with it.
It doesn’t say shooting war, does it? Straw argument.
Besides, Russia and Ukraine are already in a shooting war.
What I do not understand is why we had anything to say about the proposed Israel natural gas pipeline from the Med to Egypt ,Cyprus and onto to Greece?
You would think the US/Europe would be in favor of our best ally and the only democracy in the Middle East selling natural gas to Europe and Egypt.
“If that issue was such a big deal then Russia never would have signed the Budapest Accession to the NNPT.”
The Russian Federation probably has claimed that it has a right and need to ‘defend’ Russians in what has long been recognized as Ukraine.
In 1775 King George III was generally recognized as the lawful ruler of the 13 colonies by both the colonists and the rest of the then modern world.
I suspect no one here will say Massachusetts and Virginia lacked the right to declare their independence in 1776 after the King’s abuses and neglect.
The two new Russian language republics could similarly declare their independence. Like Louis XVI, Vladimir Putin could assist them in securing and retaining their independence.
good article, thanks
And some gasoline to pour on the bodies
“If west to be its own republic, but the OIL belongs to Ukraine, do ya think Pootypoot would allow that? Nope.”
Still don’t care. It’s not a direct threat to US security, and none of our business.
But the US IS egging on NATO countries to escalate. Like they’re trying to start WWIII, with other countries paying the price.
This admin is criminal.
Sometimes I think we messed up, we shoulda invaded Russia in 1939 when they helped start ww2 by dividing up Poland. We could have ended up with vast chunks of Siberia.
They suffice as evidence, they do not suffice as proof. But the original assertion was that “most americans” don’t think a certain way and this poll is direct evidence against that assertion. So the original assertion just sits there unsupported by any factual evidence, waiting to become a pasquinade.
“The Soviet Union came to a formal end in December 1991, leaving 25 million ethnic Russians living outside the borders of their nominal homeland.”
“...ethnic Russians are more likely than non-Russians in their countries to say that Russia has an obligation to protect ethnic Russians living outside its borders.”
Let’s make sure we and NATO does not become combatants for something like flying a spy plane to give intel to a Russian class SLAVA GMC!
“Putin Pledges To Protect All Ethnic Russians Anywhere.”
The 2014 article has some history that people interested in the current subject should read about.
The Russian Federation probably has claimed that it has a right and need to ‘defend’ Russians in what has long been recognized as Ukraine.
***The time to bring that up was when they signed away recognition of Ukraine borders and sovereignty.
In 1775 King George III was generally recognized as the lawful ruler of the 13 colonies by both the colonists and the rest of the then modern world.
***So... you’re aiming for some kind of analogy here.
I suspect no one here will say Massachusetts and Virginia lacked the right to declare their independence in 1776 after the King’s abuses and neglect.
***And the analogy would be that there’s 2 independent provinces being abused & neglected in Ukraine. The analogy falls real short. First of all, Mass & VA were an entire ocean away from Britain whereas the Donbass is next door to Russia. Russia wasn’t even interested in those 2 regions until oil & gas reserves were discovered there. So they sent in firebrand agitator malefactors to stir up trouble in order to build up excuses to invade & take oil.
The two new Russian language republics could similarly declare their independence.
***And why did they wait until after oil was discovered, hmmmm? Because most people in that region were just minding their own bizness until Ras Putin went in and stirred things up.
Like Louis XVI, Vladimir Putin could assist them in securing and retaining their independence.
***Louis XVI didn’t invade those provinces to take them for himself. Your analogy fails.
none of our business.

I don’t think the Poles or Brits need or desire any pushing from Joe Biden et al.
