House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy escaped the wrath of former President Donald Trump after the California Republican was caught on tape stating he planned to ask Trump to resign following the Jan. 6 riots — but that doesn't mean the saga is over for him yet.
On Monday, McCarthy visited the southern border with other Republican lawmakers, and did a brief interview with Fox News national correspondent Bill Melugin. Melugin asked McCarthy about the leaked tape, as well as the lawmaker's assertion that reporting done by New York Times political correspondents was "totally false."
"I never told the president to resign, it was a conversation that we had about scenarios going forward," McCarthy said. "But that's not really critical... What's happening is what's happening on this border right now."

LOL. This should go viral.
“I never told the president to resign, it was a conversation that we had about scenarios going forward,” McCarthy said. “But that’s not really critical... What’s happening is what’s happening on this border right now.”
Wow, the Jedi mind trick. Sorry Kev, not working. You’re the wrong guy for the job. Go away.
There has been one man, in my lifetime, who could have pulled it off. Given that, it would have taken an extraordinary circumstance to give Trump the opportunity. That opportunity occurred when the entirety of the DC GOP went all in publicly on the coup 1/7. Had Trump denounced, who I denounced on 1/7, he could have taken the majority of his eighty plus million voters with him. Oh, but what a chance! Trump could have destroyed the GOP. The VERY SAME people who chased Trump out of town are still calling every shot. The Swamp = DC GOP. You are a fool is you think you can reform them. You must blow it up and start with a real second party.
I saw this live and it was a beautiful thing. Bill Melugin never let him off the hook regardless how much McCarthy squirmed.
Perot with 17%. He was better than Pop Bush by a mile.
He was also spot on about NAFTA and globalism.
That’s good 👍
There’s around 50 political parties in the US.
Really there are 2.
Really, there’s only one.🙄
True, uniparty.
I agree - if there was ever a moment to start a new party - 1/7 was the moment.
But I still think it wouldn’t work, even then.
Not all of those 80 plus million Trump voters would follow him to a new party.
Tens of millions of them voted for him simply because he was the Republican. I know plenty of people like that in both parties.
You are losing those knee-jerk party line voters if you try to start a new party.
I think (now that the legal challenge, audits and decertifications seem to be getting nowhere) the only solution is doing what we are doing - clean up the Republican Party:
- do a better job of preventing fraud
- do a better job of weeding out the RINOs
- win back the legislature - with MAGA candidates
- then go after the criminals and finally drain the swamp.
I do think we should stop using the name GOP, which is just a nickname - keep the name Republican, but use MAGA as the nickname.
That wasn't the question asked, it was did you discuss asking the President to resign. Kevin is a dirtbag. Today's McCarthy news is that he reprimanded Gaetz for speaking up and defending Trump. Gaetz's reply back to little Kevin was good, saying how Little Kevin was too busy defending Liz Cheney.
The GOP-e has been blocking the border issue for 30 years.
They wanted to get rid of Trump as he was trying to fix the problem.
You’re right, Perot was by far the best third party challenger ever - and I think it was actually 19% - but that was still not even close to winning.
Pop pop got 37% just for being a Republican. Clinton got 43% just for being a Democrat.
There are tons of voters who just blindly vote along party lines.
I certainly agree with party line voters. I was just answering the question, and then stating my dislike of HW, and far better thoughts about Perot.
Got it. Picking Bush was Reagan’s one mistake.
Agreed. I think he must have been pushed on it.
How does one trust the top spook?
Right, it was the Rockefeller wing of the Republican Party (which is what we used to call RINOs back then).
They didn’t like Reagan any more than today’s Republican leadership likes Trump.
I really think the leadership and politicians consider we the people to be their enemies. If someone comes along that is truly popular, the leadership sees that as a huge threat.
They used Bush to try and control Reagan just the way they used all that impeachment nonsense to hogtie Trump.
Maybe DJT is becoming a politician, and rather than torching McCarthy to his face, he’s maneuvering behind the scenes.
I think you are close, but:
I believe Trump has decided that McCarthy has committed political suicide and is no longer worth the time and effort and that others will punish McCarthy.
McCarthy has demonstrated in a most definite way that only a fool would believe him and trust him in anything he says or promises.
Sandra Day O’Connor and Tony Kennedy were #2 and #3.
Tagline.
