One of the most senior US officials in the Pacific has refused to rule out military action against Solomon Islands if it were to allow China to establish a military base there, saying that the security deal between the countries presented “potential regional security implications” for the US and other allies.
Ambassador Daniel Kritenbrink, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, was part of a high-level US delegation to the Pacific country last week.
He said the US team, which also included the National Security Council coordinator for Indo-Pacific affairs, Kurt Campbell, had a 90-minute “constructive and candid” meeting with prime minister Manasseh Sogavare in which the US team detailed concerns about its recently signed security deal with China.
Temper tantrums and invasion threats over Solomon Islands deal with China will push Pacific allies away Read more “We wanted to outline for our friends in the Solomons, what our concerns are,” said Kritenbrink. “Prime minister Sogavare indicated that in the Solomon Islands’ view, the agreement they’ve concluded has solely domestic implications. But we’ve made clear that there are potential regional security implications of the agreement not just for ourselves, but for allies and partners across the region.”

Why? When? Who do you think made China into what it is?
Glad you’re here to defend the rights of the Solomon Islands.
If you think foreign affairs don’t include hypocrisy by all countries, maybe you’ll understand a little better when you graduate high school.
As for being a conservative, my views align with Donald Trump. Yours do not.
What’s your point?
People like you are sickening
Poor innocent little Russia and China were sitting around reading their bibles, and evil bully America made them attack and kill people and enslave their citizens. Be right back after I vomit.
Our southern border is being invaded and it is unsustainable. Nearly 42,000 people ages 18-45 died from just fentanyl overdoses alone in 2021. It’s a national emergency. Not to mention the crime and strain on all our resources.
I’m embarrassed some people care more for places thousands of miles away than they do USA. That’s anti-Americanism.
Yep, that is delusion for sure.
Pro - Chi Com traitors, starting with Nixon.
I think they are framing themselves in a bad light. They are saying the US refusing to tolerate a Communist Chinese base in the Solomon Islands the same as Russia invading Ukraine. To anyone who is not reflexively anti-American, it plainly is not.
Look at our southern border. THAT is a threat to our security.
That’s my point.
Complete nonsequitur. One has nothing to do with the other.
Does not make the Chi Coms any less monstrously evil.
I think Nixon should have been removed for meeting with Mao.
well, on that I agree with you.
The prevailing opinion on Free Republic these days appears to be that Putin’s Russia and Communist China are morally equivalent, if not superior, to the United States. Never thought I’d see the day.
When our government is filled with deep state pro-chi com traitors?
““Gee, why do we not want China to have a military base from which they can attack Australia?”
Why did the people in charge now leave Bagram Airfield, available for China and other enemies, to just take over?
Don’t worry about China and Russia taking everything we have, the open border policy of Biden is doing that. Our biggest enemy and security threat is in the WH.
That’s true. One is our own border invasion, and the other is thousands of miles away in another country.
Oh, I agree with you whole-heartily; China and Russia are the only two countries in the world that are a threat to the United States economically/militarily and militarily (due to their nuclear stockpiles, not conventional military), respectively.
But going all the way back to the Peace of Westphalia, it was recognized that sovereign nations have complicated spheres of influence and interests. NATO was an anti-USSR pact when that certainly made sense; the Soviets were a hairsbreadth away from pouring through the Fulda Gap. Who decided that it would, of necessity, become an anti-Russia pact? And who decided, despite the sober voices of three decades consoling against it, that NATO should continue to push eastward? I’m sure I don’t have to lecture you on European geography, but every mile pushed eastward makes Russia more indefensible; its a single plain until the Ural Mountains.
The 2014, US-supported coup against the legitimately elected Ukrainian government threatened Russia’s territorial hegemony, and threatened one of only two of their warm-water ports. Such a thing could not stand if Russia still considered itself a world-power, and Russia responded exactly as any rational country would: they invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea.
But here’s the thing: seeing China and Russia as threats to the United States is not the same as causing conflict and sowing strife just because we have to be on the opposite side of said countries. If Ukraine still had its legitimately elected pro-Russian government, this war would not be happening. We chose this conflict, we wanted this, and my fear is that “this business will get out of control and we’ll be lucky to live through it”, to quote a famous movie.
I can see where you are coming from there.
But the U.S. is threatening and Solomon Islands isn’t on the borders of the U.S.
And those taking to task some here refuse to acknowledge, whether we like it or not, we will have a multipolar world or we’ll end up with nuclear armageddon.
We are heading to multiple “Monroe Doctrines” encompassing India, Russia, China, Brazil, the U.S., etc.
Do I like it? No. I prefer sinpler times.
But it is reality.
In the end, going by the Golden Rule would lead to NATO not expanding up to Russia’s borders and it would also mean no China/Russia alliance having troops in Mexico.
Isn’t that the best way?
You have a good day!
