I always used to joke with the line, "I don't pay taxes; I got a refund." Only this year, for the first, and probably last time in my life, it was true. I was able to file a joint return with my deceased spouse who died last year, and although I have no taxes deducted from my pension or investments, my wife had received one month of pension from which a few hundred dollars had been deducted. That entire amount was refunded, and I ended up paying zero taxes.
I won't be so lucky when I have to start taking mandatory deductions from my IRA! But I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

Still, very sorry to hear about your spouse passing. God Bless!

‘I always used to joke with the line, “I don’t pay taxes; I got a refund.”
this year, because my wife realized a capital loss on a stock investment whose sale resulted in the preferred stockholders gobbling all the proceeds, the $3,000 write off allowance more than offset our tax liability, and made for a decent refund...
we get two more years to realize this capital loss, so two more years of refund, regardless of my RMD’s from retirement accounts...
