This could be a big step towards the use of tactical nukes.
Putin may or may not be “insane” but to use nukes he would have to rely on others to actually order the buttons pushed and they too would have to be “insane”.
Nuremberg made it clear that “just following orders” was not a defense for war crimes. Using nukes would be a war crime.

did the Russian ship even try to fight back?Naval engagement of this type could be compared to, "And then, out of nowhere, someone shot him twice in the back of the head!"
The Russians are lucky that 10% of the crew was able to save themselves.
Under such circumstances, there is little opportunity to "fight back."

Hey, it wasn’t hypersonic so it doesn’t count. It only counts if they use a hypersonic missile.

You have to wonder if they ever saw it coming, I have no inside knowledge, I think the Russian Captain thought he was out of range of any Ukrainian defenses, only to be sadly mistaken.
Either that or the Russian Cruiser’s missile capabilities are not what they are cracked up to be and have to be closer to the shore to have any chance to hit their targets, the downside is getting closer puts them into range of the Ukrainian defenses which cost them the ship.
