Not enough info to call it a good or bad shoot. Article may or may not be accurate. Dumb on the shooters part to leave his keys in a car with firearms. But the world will get by just fine with one less car/gun thief.
Viana should have let the carjacker go, if the carjacker ran over a cop's kid, the "Police" would solve the problem for him.
If true, that's assault with a deadly weapon and certainly warranted gunfire.
In my town three cops all standing WAY off to the side killed a guy cuz they’re chicken shit jackboots. No charges. I support the decent cops but there are way too many jackboots in the ranks.
Where I live a thief was driving off in a man’s pickup truck. The man fired a single shot from way behind the truck, hitting the miscreant in the back of the head, causing his demise. The man was charged with manslaughter but was acquitted by a jury. Juries don’t like car thieves.
This is not going to go well.
Hopefully the jury will resolve it positively.

Good shoot. If I’m on the jury... Not guilty. In most States, deadly force by a private citizen is justifiable to stop the commission of a felony. Grand theft auto (AZ Class 3 felony) and theft of a registered machine gun are exactly that.
Let that be a lesson to you: Never talk to the police. They aren’t your friends. They don’t “just want to talk.” They are your enemy.
