Conservatives, liberals disagree on Oberlin verdict — but both feel media coverage missed the mark

Alison Schary, First Amendment lawyer at Davis Wright Tremaine, called the verdict "deeply troubling."

"Holding universities financially liable for student speech will inevitably lead them to police and censor that speech, creating a chilling effect that is antithetical to the First Amendment," Schary told Salon.

From Public Shame to the Courtroom
"If colleges were held responsible for the independent speech and actions of student protesters, that would indeed have a chilling effect on free speech. This lawsuit may even inspire future litigation against colleges that chills protected speech, as plaintiffs seeking a similar payday attempt to target administrators for what students do on their own."

Uh, no, one of the defendants was the Dean of Students, who was nowhere near a classroom when she sent out emails encouraging the students to protest the private business.

In other news bull-dyke wierdo Justine Raimondo left Oberlin in late 2021 for a similar position at small private liberal arts Oglethorpe Univ in ATL, GA.

True, but for two things.

It was college employees using college resources that slandered them, not just students.

And, they already opened the fish can of policing student speech so you don't get to use that for leaf when it's convenient.

I find it highly ironic that a liberal college is worried about free speech.

Sure they can use their free speech right to calumny and slander, they just have to pay for it.

"Holding universities financially liable for student speech ...

It wasn't "student speech."

"The university, including Dean of Students Meredith Raimondo, helped organize boycotts and protests of the bakery, and labeled it “racist.”"

I believe it was shown at trial that college employees were involved in stirring up students and passed out fliers denouncing the business as racist.

I see they are trying to cloak themselves in a plea about free speech, but I suspect this liberal college hasent had too many, if any, conservative speakers freely talking on campus.

These liberals do not actually support free speech and never have.

But they are stupid or duplicitous as this isn’t a case of free speech at all. On second thought, replace the word or with and.

I hope that the university gets into several financial difficulty to the point that it is forced to close. The professors there can learn to code.
