Russia is suspending its cooperation on the International Space Station (ISS), according to Dmitry Rogozin, head of Russian space agency Roscosmos.
The country will also suspend its partnership with NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Rogozin said.
Newsweek and others first reported the story.
In a series of tweets written in Russian on Saturday, Rogozin said: "I believe that the restoration of normal relations between partners in the International Space Station and other joint projects is possible only with the complete and unconditional lifting of illegal sanctions."
Rogozin said he sent a letter to NASA, the ESA, and the CSA demanding that they lift sanctions against a number of enterprises in the Russian rocket and space industry.
NASA responded with its own letter, which appeared to be signed by NASA chief Bill Nelson, according to a photo shared by Rogozin.
Insider has not been able to independently verify the authenticity of the letter, which said: "The US continues to support international government space cooperation, especially those activities associated with operating the ISS with Russia, Canada, Europe, and Japan."

Its not just the bureaucrats that are in the picture. Musk is a showman and he cares a lot about his public image. He LOVES it when he can come to the rescue.

Brilliant analysis—look forward to seeing your plan to get our astronaut back down from space—while howling and name calling at the Russians.
Succckkk beta, suuccckkk
You’ve heard of Space X right?

LOL. It’s Russia having the tantrum here. I’m sure they’ll have a good cry, too, when Finland joins NATO this summer. Putin is the best salesman NATO has ever had.
Musk already said he would do that. Try to keep up so you don’t post stuff that blows up in your face.
Musk. Checkmate Russia.
Oh brother. Mark Vande Hei, the US Astronaut that went up with the Russians, came down this week already.
He landed in Kazakhstan (not Russia), and has been back in Houston for a couple of days already.
(FYI Comrade: Houston is in the USA.)
The latest Soyuz went up with a crew of 3 Russians, all suspiciously wearing "yellow and blue" jumpsuits.
So we just took command of it right?
I read something that the ISS needs both American and Russian modules to operate. Did they disconnect the Russian module?
We should just take it.
Elon is smart enough to know that if he doesn’t get the approvals in Texas, he won’t get them at the Cape ether
—
In Musk’s last speech he said he already has Cape approvals and would move the Texas operation there in 6 months, at most.
As far as the US goes he’s already constructing a offshore site.
Interesting thought.
I suspect that the three or at two of the three have plans and probably working replacements that are modern and thus better tan the aging current hodgepodge.
The question then becomes, will they join forces to accomplish together what they can’t as individuals?
Musk can demand that Biden’s FAA and EPA stop slow-walking his permits for bgg the Starship launches, as it will be the most economical way to support the station long-term.
“We should just take it.”
Sure! Isn’t that part of what got us in this mess to begin with. We just stepped in and took; Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan, and took half of the Russian financial reserves outside of Russia. Over 300 billion. What is that called if you or I just TAKE (grab) money from someone else?
And then, the biggest TOOK of all is the dollars the political class TOOK from Ukraine. Hunter Biden, 10% for the big guy, Paul Manafort, and so many others that did not make the news.
Yea. TOOK is a good idea. Right?
Remember. Paybacks are hell.
