Putin has a problem. His invasion of Ukraine, intended as a days-long operation, is now grinding into its third week and becoming a bloodbath. Attacks across the country are stalled amid predictions that Russia will soon struggle to hold the territory it has - let alone capture more. In short: he needs more men for the meat grinder.
But where to find them? America estimates Russia has committed somewhere between half and three quarters of its total land forces to Ukraine, and all of those are already involved in the fighting. Some 'spare' units will be involved in active missions elsewhere, while others will be for territorial defence - leaving the country vulnerable to attack if they are sent abroad.
That conundrum has forced the Kremlin to reach far from the frontlines in search of men, according to Britain's Ministry of Defence, which says reinforcements are now being drawn from as far afield as eastern Siberia, the Pacific Fleet, and Armenia. That is in addition to Syrian fighters and paid mercenaries - hundreds of the from the shadowy Wagner Group - which have already been committed to the fight.
The UK believes such reinforcements would likely be used to hold Ukrainian territory already captured by Russia which would then free up regular units for fresh assaults - almost certainly targeting major cities like Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odessa and Chernihiv. Another goal would likely be to encircle a large number of Ukrainian forces in the Donbass, spread out along the old frontline with Russian-backed rebel groups.
But it is unclear whether those reinforcements will be effective. Some could take weeks to reach the front, while Syrian mercenaries are likely to be poorly trained and un-used to the terrain and climate of eastern Europe.

Whoops... it was 19 days since...
My mistake.
Still...
150,000 troops, and still not sealing the deal?
Western propaganda? Does that include Putin’s own words? He’s said many times Ukraine is an illigimate nation and that Ukrainians are really Russians. You might want to listen to what Putin actually says. He’s quite honest about his goals here.
“Ukrainians are really Russians.”
Think that through—does Putin want to kill civilians who are “really Russians”.
The Putin haters can’t get their propaganda straight.
Why not? Putin has killed Russian speakers than any Kremlin leader since Stalin.
Western propaganda is hazardous to your mental health.
Putin can’t win—his troops are ill trained and ill lead. They are falling apart on every front. Their tanks are worthless and air power only good for blowing up civilian buildings. They will be retreating soon—out of gas and ammunition. They were a paper tiger. Time to launch a NATO attack to seize Moscow! They got Nothin to stop even an attack from Poland and the Baltic states. If war comes, they will be beaten in two weeks by NATO and the USA. One American woman can beat ten Russian Conscripts.
LOL. My mistake. I should have stayed out of the fruit bowl today. Good day.
Bingo - we’ve been drawn to the fleecing for decades with this ‘invincible communist threat’ garbage.
What’s the latest been? “HYPERSONIC THREAT!” Their weapons research/special effects department manage to run a couple of missile tests, and all of a sudden Lockheed/Boeing/Northrup get huge contracts.
The most competent aspect of Russian arms is the ability to present a Potemkin threat to politicos and generallisimos that are more than willing to accept the fraud in order to cash in on contracts and kickbacks and sweet post-retirement board seats.
RE: Imagine the U. S. invading Mexico and having to call in
foreign nationals to help 50 days later...
I understand that the Russians have shown in this operation that they are not as formidable as people make them out to be. BUT DESPITE THAT... they have the numbers and arms, and as you said... foreign mercenaries.
The best I can say in favor of Ukraine is they have put a wrench on the Russian plan. But even with that, it is a war of attrition and the odds aren’t in Ukraine’s favor as this stretches on... unless we and the rest of the countries who support them supply their military with equivalent arms and planes
Look, I am awed at the courage and skill of the Ukranians and am rooting for them to repel the Russians, but I’m looking at this clinically...
Early on I stated I thought the Russians would prevail. At
this point I’m rather shocked that their military seems so
impotent.
Their bombing of civilian areas just shows how desperate
they are. Bringing in Mercs after trying to trash the
Ukraine on the same issue, is also very telling.
They are having to do things that make their military look
very bad.
If they have lost 4 or 5 generals, it’s a devastating
loss. Compared to other long wars, this three week
war has been very costly.
I made a mistake with that 50 day figure. I figure the
FReepathon figures in my head, calculating how many days
have gone by. Doing that recently, I added the totals of
three months, and I accidentally did the same thing
here in my head.
It is 19 days today. Oops...
There is a narrative being inserted into and along with the truth of the imagery.
MSM focus du jour, muddled high level negotiations, chaos, etc... reading imagery is like reading tea leaves sometimes there is a whole onion of layering that will probably never be made available to the public. Sometimes the narrative resembles the comedic lip syncing of a football game vids on YouTube... it is that blatantly obvious.
My great concern is who’s going to poke the bear, the bear might have stumbled into a honey farm, and the bees are stinging away.
Putin, like Khrushchev during the Cuban Missile crisis needed an out, to save face. A known enemy is probably better than the alternative so the JFK staff and cabinet offered Khrushchev a diplomatic resolution, an incentive package some of which remained classified.
Putin has a lot of Soviet blood running through his veins. Will there be an airspace violation? Will a former Soviet Bloc country decided they to wish to be part of NATO?
Would the press enjoy the glory another heroic war would bring to their cred? Bet on it.
Danny Rather was in country Vietnam quite a bit. Sam Donaldson, it was where all those 80s/90s/Y2K heroes of the News corporations cut their teeth.
and the military calls up the Daily Mail with this information? Why?
Ukraine has the home field advantage and has avoided major field battles in favor of local hit and run action. If this goes on the Russians will be bled white.
