Kremlin says Putin ordered to refrain from storming big cities in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered to refrain from storming Ukraine’s big cities for fear of great losses among civilians, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow on Monday, Peskov said “nationalist units deploy tanks, artillery, rocket launchers in residential areas,” drawing the combat actions to these areas, but the Russian special operation was planned considering this circumstance.

Peskov blasted as “provocative” the remarks by US national security adviser Jake Sullivan and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who alleged that Putin was “disappointed” about the lack of progress in capturing the big cities.

“The mentioned top officials of the US and the EU, apparently, are pushing Russia to storm major cities of Ukraine in order to hold our country responsible for the deaths of civilians. We believe that such a position is provocative.

“At the beginning of the operation, the Russian president did instruct the Defense Ministry to refrain from immediately storming large settlements, including Kyiv, due to the fact that armed nationalist formations are equipping firing points, placing heavy military equipment directly in residential areas.

OK Bob, let’s talk combat in urban environments. Are you a well trained combatant in this? No, you’re not. MOUT (Military Operations Urban Terrain) normally gives the defense a 10:1 superiority with the defense outmatched in firepower. Evenly matched forces this ratio reaches 100:1 for the defense.

Depends on training as well as depth of defense.

The only way to win decisively in cities is to level them as in WWII from the air along with saturation artillery. Fighting house to house, room to room is living hell. It’s ok when you’ve got to clear one apartment building with two platoons of well trained troops (and lots of extra grenades). But whole cities requires logistics beyond that.

I trained in combat in cities in Berlin for 3 years. We were the worlds best back in the ‘80s. The Soviets would fly Mi-24s over our exercises with film crews to learn from us. (Lots of fun shooting a star cluster flare into the bottom of them when they did that. Rapid departure.)

Brave, honorable men would meet their enemy in the field. Not hide behind skirts and kindergartens.

Don’t worry, I do understand, especially with the ways cities and buildings are designed in Europe, as military defense seems to be a priority there (I wonder why!). I’ve also seen the pictures from Aleppo and WW2 and agree that is the only way to minimize losses.

So, yep, Russia has a tough job ahead if Ukraine continues to resist.

In city defenses, you set up according to avenues of enemy advance and fields of fire. You move the civilians out. Comparing the invasion of Ukraine to the Pali areas tells me all I need to know. Bet you’ve never been to either place.

Of course if all you believe is what the Kremlin tells you, nothing else matters.

When’s the last time you fought in a city, sailor?

Either the Russians are bombarding apartment buildings, purposefully, or they have the worst artillery and air bombardment skills in the history of the world. Catapults would be more accurate.

Yeah, it’s really horrible for all involved. Cities are the worst, for sure. Every shadow requires identification in a split second with your finger on the trigger. You never, ever, really sleep.

Even getting to food or taking a piss is an exercise in survival. Communications often jammed, rotating security 24/7. Lots of time spent just staying awake over the sights of your field of fire, examining every movement.

The survivors on both sides will not sleep for years.

Back in the early ‘80s our Brigade Commander in Berlin made a bet with the Russian Commander that they couldn’t hit the 50 yard line on our barracks football field, at noon on that Saturday. (McNair Barracks, Berlin Brigade Infantry)

We were in formation on the outsides of the field on that Saturday, watching. At noon we heard the incoming mortar round.

It landed on the 48 yard line. A training round with no charge.

They are excellent at landing arty right where they want.

“You move the civilians out.”

Ukraine forgot that part.

There weren’t any.

So in your world (is that St. Petersberg?) all of the NATO, UN, and OSCE reports are false?

On 7 November, NATO officials confirmed the continued invasion of Ukraine, with 32 Russian tanks, 16 howitzer cannons and 30 trucks of troops entering the country.[177] On 12 November, NATO reiterated the prevalence of Russian troops; US general Philip Breedlove said "Russian tanks, Russian artillery, Russian air defence systems and Russian combat troops" were sighted.[79] The Lithuanian Mission to the United Nations denounced Russia's 'undeclared war' on Ukraine.[178] Journalist Menahem Kahana took a picture showing a 1RL232 "Leopard" battlefield surveillance radar system in Torez, east of Donetsk; and Dutch freelance journalist Stefan Huijboom took pictures which showed the 1RL232 traveling with the 1RL239 "Lynx" radar system.[179]

OSCE monitors further observed vehicles apparently used to transport soldiers' dead bodies crossing the Russian-Ukrainian border – in one case a vehicle marked with Russia's military code for soldiers killed in action crossed from Russia into Ukraine on 11 November 2014, and later returned.[180] On 23 January 2015 the Committee of Soldiers' Mothers warned about conscripts being sent to east Ukraine.[181] NATO said it had seen an increase in Russian tanks, artillery pieces and other heavy military equipment in eastern Ukraine and renewed its call for Moscow to withdraw its forces.[182]

Source. Note that the Wikipedia article has many sources cited.

You are either very misinformed or just repeating Russian propaganda talking points. The Russians attacked and invaded Ukraine in 2014 and the winter of 2015.

Well, it is actually Texas, New Mexico and Colorado depending on the week. But yes, those three entities are congenital liars pushing propaganda.

Just like Syrian “gas attacks”. Start any claim from Breedlove, or any post from OSCE NATO and UN with “once upon a time”.

What is you basis for trusting the word of any of those three entities?

I am not busy gagging on Putin's propaganda. If you come up for a breath you might read and learn something.

There is a lot of evidence from multiple sources.

One example
