Ukrainians had to be issued guns to defend the homeland because the government took theirs away years ago. Let’s see how that works out.

The US was not attacked on the mainland in WWll because the Japanese knew how well armed we were.

“The US was not attacked on the mainland in WWll because the Japanese knew how well armed we were.”

Well, I kind of think the Pacific Fleet might have had something to do with that decision as well.

The Japanese fleet didn’t actually have the range to get to CONUS and return at the time, with the exception of some of their huge submarines. That’s why they were trying to take the Aleutians, to get a base of operations to threaten invasion of CONUS.

In a rather grim bit of irony, given their later high fuel efficiency vehicle developments, the Japanese fleet had both low fuel efficiency and compared to their American counterparts, reduced fuel capacity. Their entire fleet was designed for a short but hyperintense decisive battle in their regional waters. To that end, they were optimized for speed over fuel efficiency or range.

The Japanese were *aware* of how well armed the US populace was as Yamato and other officers told them, but as with so many other things, the Japanese high command didn’t believe or didn’t care. In some ways, the Japanese high command had only a slightly greater grasp on reality then than Joe Biden does now.

That is totally correct.

There was a saying that they would not invade the US because “there would be a gun under every blade of grass”

Not only the Japanese, but the Russians, too.

Shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990’s, there was a symposium in western Europe attended by high-ranking military officers from the United States, European members of NATO, and other countries, including Russia.

During a break in the proceedings, there was an informal cocktail party attended by many of the military officers.

At one point, an American officer walked up to a Russian officer and said, “Tell me, during the Cold War, did the Soviet Union ever consider invading the United States?”

The Russian officer laughed and said, “Oh No! You people have too many guns over there!”
