Rep. Madison Cawthorn labeled Volodymyr Zelensky a “thug” and his government “incredibly evil” amid Russia’s blood-soaked invasion of Ukraine.
The Republican from North Carolina was caught on tape at a campaign rally over the weekend attacking the Ukrainian president — who, according to his aide, has survived more than a dozen assassination attempts in the first two weeks of the war.
“Remember that Zelensky is a thug,” Cawthorn said, according to a video obtained by North Carolina’s WRAL. “Remember that the Ukrainian government is incredibly corrupt, and it is incredibly evil, and it has been pushing ‘woke’ ideologies.”
Cawthorn’s comments stand in stark contrast to the bipartisan support that’s grown around Zelensky and the Ukrainian military since the start of Russia’s brutal invasion last month.
But they echo the Republican line from 2019, when then-President Donald Trump was impeached for allegedly threatening to withhold military aid from Zelensky’s government unless the Ukrainian government investigated then-candidate Joe Biden.
During the 2019 impeachment proceedings — which culminated with Trump being acquitted by a party-line vote — GOP Rep. Jim Jordan said Ukraine was regarded by accounting firm Ernst & Young as “one of the three most corrupt countries on the planet.”
Cawthorn is currently running for reelection in North Carolina’s 11th district, where he is facing seven Republican primary challengers.
Cawthorn took to Twitter on Thursday after taking heat for bashing Zelensky.
He called Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion “disgusting,” and said he is “praying for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.”
He did not walk back his attack on the Ukrainian leader, however.
“Leaders, including Zelensky, should NOT push misinformation on America,” he said.

Yes, if you read upthread, you will see that I have acknowledged this and am not “forgetting” anything. 😏
But be thankful that we’re not being shelled, at least not at this time. It’s bad enough to have a thieving, corrupt government, but having mortars and rockets coming in somewhat indiscriminately raises the suck level significantly. I pray there is a true ceasefire soon.

Duh both are true but context, timing and priorities matter. A sitting (no pun intended) Congressman calling Zelensky a “corrupt thug” at a time when we are trying to make sure Putin’s war bogs down (so that he over extends himself with us getting directly involved) only helps Putin who is not only corrupt but a mortal enemy of USA who threatened us with nuclear war.

I grew up in a large city in New York State in the 50's and 60's when they scared us shitless with air raid drills, and the constant reminder of the threat of nuclear war. I also worked as a female officer and Sergeant in NY State's all-male prisons for 25 years. It takes an awful lot for me to be scared about anything these days. And if they're going to drop bombs, they may do it here, because the Eastern Defense Sector of NORAD is just down the street from me.

Just reviewed the FR archives on Zelensky. He’s definitely Ukraine’s version of Obama — the candidate that represented a cleansing of the country’s past sins. In the State’s case, a Black. In Ukraine’s case, a Jew. Both young, clean, and charismatic.
Back in 2015, Soros was pushing the EU to save Ukraine. He's got a lot invested in the country. To me, the last person I would want promoting me would be George Soros. I look at George Soros being on the side of Ukraine, wanting to promote it, the same way I look at the main stream media pushing RINOS as Presidential candidates. Neither one has my best interest at heart.
I hear ya. I don’t scare easily either. I grew up during the Cold War as a Navy brat. We were in Italy when the Soviets invaded Czechoslovakia in ‘68 and that’s when I learned what a bug-out bag was.
I spent the better part of nine years in a war zone (working - my choice) as an adult and I feel for the people in Ukraine dealing with the bombs. I certainly “dodged” my share of incoming crap. You sort of get used to it but not really.
That’s why I pray there is a genuine ceasefire. I hate the thought of people having to live like that.

I hear you. Innocent people are always caught in the cross-hairs of these conflicts. Look how long Israel has been putting up with missile strikes, and terrorist attacks from every-which way.
Considering just who is backing the Ukraine the hardest, I’m inclined to give this much more credibility than I would have otherwise.

Probably the closest thing to the truth, but Ukraine hasn’t threatened us with nuclear war.
Cawthorn is not a jackass - he’s a man who stands up for what he believes even if it means others will opject to how he presents his positions. We need more men like that serving our country.
Ukraines people have always had inside conflicts because their population is thuggish. Just the nature of their culture. Just ask any female living in Ukrain who say there’s a serious shotage of men who are good men.
They aren’t only supported - they’re in the Ukrainian Army as a Nazi Battalion . Peroshanko and then Zelensky both gave them a place of honor.

I’m guessing you’ve seen Putin’s address from late February. Naturally, his position is presented as being altruistic, but that aside, I found Putin’s multiple references to NGOs very interesting.
We’d all be better served by getting into the details instead of being castigated for not being wrapped in the Ukrainian flag. Being objective is somehow tantamount to being a Russian propagandist... Can we describe the accusers as being FRoke? lol
