Indeed. Putin will still likely prevail in conquering Ukraine, but there is no way he can hold it. His war was premised on the Ukrainians not being a real nation and not being willing to fight for their country. He was very wrong on that.

The famous war theorist Carl von Clausewitz told us that “war is the continuation of politics by other means.” The key word here is “means.” In other words, wars should have a clear political objective on what the use of force is supposed to achieve.

Writer is confusing "means" with "ends."

The objectives which one wishes to achieve are the "ends."

The ways and methods of achieving that objective are the "means."

Clausewitz's quote says nothing about the particular objectives which one wishes to achieve.

Of course, having clear objectives is advisable - however, the quote cited here does not deal with that.

Regards,

The Russians lost the first Chechen War. They destroyed Gronzy the second time around. Now it is a loyal province of the Russian Federation.

The Russians are able to conquer Ukraine. The catch is that there may be no one left and all the buildings would be reduced to rubble in that scenario. The Romans did it too Carthage. Kyiv is a special city and I would say that the Russians wouldn't want to destroy the city completely.

Wow what claptrap….

A week old war is lost because it didn’t end in a week?

What stupidity.

The good news is that Putin has likely already lost the war politically, no matter if he finally subdues Ukraine.

The headline said nothing about this "politically" qualifier. The headline was a lie.

Is there not some old saying

Nothing ventured, nothing gained?

And In the interests of disclosure and transparency I certify that I have and have had no financial interests in this conflict within the last 40 days.

I still think the question is how much of Ukraine will Putin settle for to leave the rest of Ukraine alone. How much for a win and how much for a loss?

The war in Ukraine is still in its early stages, but Russia has likely already lost. ....

Good article.

Yes, the keystone cops jumped off without topping off vehicles, loading rations, doing the basics.

As a young LT I remember we had to keep the soviets from their objective of reaching the Rhine in 7 days. The reds in Kiev have gone 70 miles in 9 days. How the mighty have fallen.

The reds have surrounded Kiev, but do not have the city. They have to bypass to continue their offensive forward to link up with the Crimean contingent. They will have to use secondary roads for their logistics and the Ukrainians in Kiew will have the advantage of interior lines. Not good for the reds.

I believe that putie will press on and level Ukraine with resulting catastrophic casualties, while seeing his economy disintegrate from sanctions.

Anwar Sadat never knew what hit him.

Prematurely calling a victory over Putin. We have not seen yet the unintended consequences of the West’s declaration of war against Russia economically. Food shortages, supply chain problems, and high energy costs can send us into a global recession or worse.

It seems to me that the over-arching danger is that Putin perceives “The West” as sustaining the Ukrainians. Given the popularity of “pre-emptive strikes” in recent decades, things might go nuclear unexpectedly.

Idiot author makes some valid points all the while quoting a famous military strategist and ignoring the obvious: Russian forces have the Ukrainians in a pocket and all the Russians have to do is close it.......

Starting in the 1970’s we took a long look at the Soviet buildup in eastern Europe and decided that we needed to counter their methods of fighting wars in a very fundamental way. In the following decades, through a lot of time, effort, and money, we followed through on this strategy. Hence the advent of dedicated tankbusters, high-tech MANPAD’s, stealth, advanced all-weather avionics, GPS, and drones. We spent all of this effort changing the rules of the game and now we’re seeing the fruits. The Russians are currently learning a hard lesson: 20th-century methods of fighting wars are obsolete.
