If Putin was like Hitler he would be incinerating an entire race of people.

Putin would if he could ... and he can.

Interesting body language from the Russian and Ukrainian negotiators at this morning’s peace talks in Belarus:

“Putin wants all of Ukraine”

Not sure why that would be surprising to anyone.

Ukraine's per-capita GDP was $3726.93 (2020). Mexico's was $8346.70 (2020) and we were trying to build a wall.

Ukraine's per capita GDP was about 45% of Mexico's, 37% of Russia's.

It surprises me, because I had thought that Putin is a murderous psychopath, but at least he was smart. I doubt that now.

If I were ruling a country that is an economic fiasco, the last thing I would want to do is annex a country that is even more of an economic fiasco.

Macron is right about the mistake Putin is making. The way this is going, the only country of any substance that will be willing to trade with Putin will be China. Iran and Venezuela can’t offer anything to Russia that they don’t already have. Russia will be entirely dependent on China to keep their economy afloat, and they can look forward to increasing demands from the Chinese in return. The Chinese won’t be asking, they’ll be telling, because Putin won’t have anywhere else to turn.

I do my best to avoid underestimating real evil ... although it is often difficult to face as it’s so very bright.

Putin agrees to withdraw from Kiev. Russia keeps the “disputed territories”. Agreement that remaining Ukraine (moldova) remain independent. But will never be part of NATO or have Nato bases.

Lol, who is going to trust Putin on anything after this invasion? Giving him more territory after the invasion is rewarding Putin's invasion.

Yet, you’ll see it happen.
My only consolation will be that I told you so.

The problem with this is that it is just plain old imperialism. Ukrainians are a different people, much like the Finns and Poles and Lithuanians and Tajiks. There never was anything holding them to the Russian center other than superior force, exerted on behalf of and for the benefit of a Russian ruling class and to the detriment of the ruled.

I had some fun today looking into the Russian vs Ukrainian languages. I thought they would be quite similar, but it turns out not to be as much as I thought. In fact, it seems that lexical similarity is 62%, which is much lower than Spanish and Italian, or Spanish and Portuguese, or even Spanish and French (75%). Imagine telling the Spanish that they need to let the French rule them because they are “brothers”. The last time that was tried it went very badly.

Zelenskyy says “give us planes” but I thought some jets were being donated by someone?. Guess another broken promise.

The baddies poke and poke and poke, now here, now there, then at another place, until they find a soft spot.

Then they keep pounding away at that soft spot.

The Baltics are stuck out at the end of a limb, and can only be got to from Poland through a narrow choke point. Otherwise they are nearly surrounded by Russia and Belorussia. Look at a map. They are the low hanging fruit, if Putin is thinking of Stage II.

I agree, that Russia appears to want all of Ukraine.

Poland will move in before they get it.

I think Putin basically views all of Western Europe as panty-wearing little sissy-girls. If there are any men left on that continent, they'd better start stepping up.

We could use someone like Charles Martel right now, but there hasn't been anyone remotely like him for many hundreds of years.
