If attendant service is universal it costs about 1 cent per gallon. If it is optional, as previously pointed out, it will cost 10 cents per galllon.

I'm old enough to remember when nobody pumped their own gas.
You would pull into a service station and usually some young kid would come running out. While he was filling your tank, he'd check the tire pressure, clean your windshield and offer to check under your hood for proper fluid levels.
You could sit in the car while all this was going on or you could go into the gas station and get coffee for a quarter as well as free maps. They let you in the restroom back then too and they were clean.
Yes, gas stations would give maps out for free. Of course they would have advertisements and on the map would be other locations of the gas station you were at.

And free stuff with fill-ups, like nice coffee cups. I still have some game bird themed Fire-King coffee cups.

Yea - going into a gas station is like embarking on some
exotic adventure
First you get some turd world type who cant speak english
trying to make them understand you is a chore
Then they either refuse to get you the correct change or try to short you

Stations will no longer have to pay gas jockeys. Imagine all those poor Pump Managers who are a few years away from retiring.
Devastating.

Says the statist who is perfectly happy to cheer on government create stupid laws for mandated make-work programs the benefit nobody and waste both money and human potential?

Believe it or not self-service gasoline is a bad idea. The cost of universal service is negligible (maybe 1 cent per gallon?), and provides employment to people who can’t otherwise get any.
Such a bad idea, it doesn't work in the other 48 States? First I've ever heard of it being an issue... But why not force every company to hire superlative positions? Every grocery store should have someone who walks with each customer to get all the stuff off the shelf. Every petco should hire a guy whose only job is to pet each pet that walks in. Every office needs a guy who just walks around asking how everyone's day is going.
Gas stations make maybe three to five cents per gallon. I wouldn't call 20-30% less profit a "negligible cost"...

Gas is cheaper here than in the pump your own state also, so outside of NJ you often do all the work and don’t save any money.
Somehow I doubt self-pumping vs full service is the main driver of price variations between States.
And I don't know where you get pricing from, Google maps shows NJ to range from $3.50-$4/gal, most around $3.80. Whereas I filled up yesterday for $3.27. And that's with a $.50 spike in the past week or so.

Agree. Just wait for all electric cars...you won't be able to plug yours in...without assitance a "plugger in guy"

lol, about time. Just think that arrogant NJ’ians pumping their own gas, it’s beneath them; but it will be optional to coddle the weak as the law still mandates full service and self service as an option, it’s a step in the right direction.
