Ukraine credits Turkish drones with eviscerating Russian tanks and armor in their first use in a major conflict

As Russia pounded Ukraine in the opening days of its invasion, the defenders credited a new piece of equipment with helping them fight back — the Bayraktar TB2 drone.

Videos shared by the Ukrainian military showed at least one strike appearing to tear apart a column of Russian tanks and armored vehicles.

One came from Malyn in the Zhytomyr region, about 150 kilometers from Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and shows the destruction of a Russian Buk surface-to-air missile launcher, the Ukrainian military said.

"Bayraktars at work," the caption for the same video posted on an official military Facebook page said. "Be afraid, enemies, there will be no peace for you in our land." The operators can be heard cheering in the video after the strike lands.

Another was from southern Ukraine's Chornobaivka, an area that experienced heavy fighting from Russian forces pouring in via Crimea, which is occupied by Russia.

Footage from the ground appears to show the aftermath, with charred, smoking metal strewed along a highway. The first video below was shared by the Ukrainian Embassy in Turkey and the second by a staffer at the open-source research collective Bellingcat.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine represents the first outing in a major conflict for the Bayraktar, an armed drone with a 12-meter wingspan and a distinctive triangular tail section.

Real?
Old footage from Gulf Wars?
Video game? (One of the images shows it being filmed on a laptop screen. So not “official” video from the drone itself like “Stormin’ Norman used to show during his press briefings.)

The Azerbaganis used a similar Israeli made systen to decimate Armenian armor. In this era of modern technology armored vehicles, open artillery, fuel trucks, any combat vehicle as well as naval surface combatants are obsolete against technologically sophisticated opponents. Between the Javelins and the drones, the Russians are getting badly roughed up and cannot fight the war they planned or for what they trained. What soldier in their right mind would want to be in any of those vehicles?

Exactly. The Ukrainians are targeting the fuel trucks and the missiles with the drones.

I don’t recall all that much snow on the ground during the Gulf War.

This war proved the prediction that in modern warfare soldiers would never see the person who fired the shot that killed them.

As I understand it, these drones have small radar cross sections, making them difficult to detect and shoot down. Not technically stealthy, but as close to stealth as you can get without being the real thing. And each drone has 4 hard points, with a maximum weapons load of 330 lbs.

A Greek paper claims the Russians have destroyed the Ukrainian assembly facility:

I expect the Germans are forking up to pay for new drones as fast as the Turks can make them.

Several of the shots are of SAM systems being taken out. If these troops knew what they are doing the SAM batteries should have easily taken out the drone.

A lot of Russians are dying because they were sent into war untrained an unprepared.

If Turkey can sell Ukraine drones why can’t we give them some?

Did the EU/Germany ever get the “Loaned” fighter jets flying in Ukraine. Maybe Drones would be better use of Resources. Take out that huge Russian Convoy.

Yes, with modern weaponry a tank is a death trap. Even large ships aren’t immune from attack with relatively inexpensive weapons. Even thirty years ago I was saying that the last place I’d want to be in a conflict between major powers was a tank.

Real, seems Russia doesn’t have defensive anti-drone technology

I dont think the US has small combat drones available in quantity. US armed drones tend to be built to carry big munitions like Hellfire. The Turks really did find a new way to skin a cat.

Just think of the negative impact on morale that's going on there. Saw lots of troops standing around, hanging out, playing Candy Crush or whatever, probably thinking they're way behind lines, away from the fighting then *WHOOSH*. Doom everywhere.
