… If we took this seriously, all news coverage of warfare would include its environmental impacts and the extent to which military activity, cyber warfare and sanctions inhibit nations’ ability to meet climate mitigation targets necessary for human survival. The consequences for human life include millions of people alive today.
Polluting events — the burning and demolition of power plants, industrial facilities, mines, water systems, and the ecological impact of bombardments, fires and fuel spills — are all just an introduction.
The long-term climatic effects of war include appalling greenhouse gas emissions. There are estimates that 2 to 3 percent of all such emissions in 1991 came from oil wells set ablaze in the Gulf War.
Continuing warfare, besides its material damage to ecosystems that sustain human life and society, mitigates against multilateral agreements that could address energy production, consumption, waste and other drivers of climate disruption.
Including climate impacts in war coverage would make it clear how much opportunity we have lost to decades of endless war, and the need to turn in a different direction.

Perfect!
The commentator has the camera close on his face while he fearfully looks behind him and tensely says, “You can her the sharp crack of credit cards and the explosive anger coming from the gas pumps behind me. In the distance the constant wail of protesters between sucks on their lattes and the incessant clack of their keyboards as they post memes online. It’s been a horrible advance from $3.79 per gallon to $4.15 with the heavy impacts on heating and air-conditioning bills audible from the nearby settlements. This is Brian Smith from NPR, reporting from the front. Back to you Roger.”
