“This would seriously impact Russian businesses with foreign customers and could do real damage to the country’s economy,”

Isn’t that the idea?

The Europeans know they’ll be forced to buy Russian oil with gold and platinum if they disconnect Russia from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) system.

Kindda hard to pay your gas bill when your supplier attacks your neighbor and you cut banking ties... so you better keep those ties together.
Man this is the worst war ever.

Gas gets shut off to Europe if they try this stunt, since Russia could rightfully claim that there is no way they’ll get paid for their gas.

Germany at least understands this, along with Hungary.

A fact that’s routinely ignored is that both Germany and Italy have sizable populations of “ex”-Commies who had an affinity for the old Soviet Union. Not everyone in the old East German DDR hated the Russkies. Some of ‘em liked the USSR. Some of them worked for the USSR. Likewise, throughout the ‘60s & ‘70s & ‘80s the Italian Communist Party was a font of Soviet propaganda and influence. Not all of those loyalties and connections are defunct.

Another element of all this is that business is business. The Euros talk up their unwavering love and support for Ukraine, but it’s mostly b.s. Business is business, and the Russkies are rolling in petro-cash, and money buys influence.

Leningrad was under Nazi siege for a year and a half and held out.

If the West pushes too hard Western brands will get replaced.

In 2020 Russian transactions amounted to about 2% of all SWIFT messages.

This is not as big of a deal at people make it out to be. The oligarchs have had months to move their money. At best..this is shutting to doors while the horse is down the street and around the corner.

It’s interesting..Bitcoin shot up a bunch right after the sanctions were announced. That bypasses SWIFT.

And unless you are sending them to Canada you are good to go. Lol.

China would like to have fossil fuels after invading Taiwan.

Only Russia can guarantee these fuels in such a situation.

Russia will naturally expect Chinese financial transaction assistance to be provided if needed.

If the Chinese are cut off from SWIFT say goodbye to Amazon and Walmart jobs too.

Ironically Cyprus is one of those countries, when the Turks invaded them just like Russia invaded Ukraine.

The Hungarian Revolution of 1848 failed because of Russian military intervention. The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 failed because of Russian (Soviet) military intervention. Both revolutions are marked by solemn national holidays in Hungary.

So I’m disappointed to see Hungary on that list. But I suppose business is business.

The KGB doesn’t need no stinking warrants to spy on hate-filled Muslims in the US and UK.

It would be big shame if certain KGB agents were reassigned.

Wouldn’t that be the point of halting SWIFT, to impact Russia? Oh, can’t stop commerce, even while war is underway. Will the profits from Russian trade cover their aid and support of the Ukraine?
