West megadrought worsens to driest in at least 1,200 years

The American West’s megadrought deepened so much last year that it is now the driest in at least 1,200 years and is a worst-case climate change scenario playing out live, a new study finds.

A dramatic drying in 2021 — about as dry as 2002 and one of the driest years ever recorded for the region — pushed the 22-year drought past the previous record-holder for megadroughts in the late 1500s and shows no signs of easing in the near future, according to a study Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

The study calculated that 42% of this megadrought can be attributed to human-caused climate change.

“Climate change is changing the baseline conditions toward a drier, gradually drier state in the West and that means the worst-case scenario keeps getting worse,” said study lead author Park Williams, a climate hydrologist at UCLA. “This is right in line with what people were thinking of in the 1900s as a worst-case scenario. But today I think we need to be even preparing for conditions in the future that are far worse than this.”

Williams used 29 models to create a hypothetical world with no human-caused warming then compared it to what happened in real life — the scientifically accepted way to check if an extreme weather event is due to climate change.

Correct. During the last great period of global warming (1000-1350 or so), the Vikings settled Greenland and had dairy farms up to 3000 head of cattle.

During the current cycle, lobster has become plentiful and affordable.

In Hannibal's time (250 BC), savanna was on what is now the northern edge of the Sahara desert. That's where he got his elephants and points northward to the Mediterranean coast were rich croplands.

Typical liberal BS. They choose one spot and claim all of the western States are like that one spot.

It’s like their statement that owning a gun means a 7 times higher suicide rate when all they did was take one year in King County, Seattle, Washington, where there was that figure and claimed it across all gun owners for all time.

“My understanding has been that dry conditions result from cooling — water gets locked up in ice and the world becomes drier.”

That is exactly right. Antarctica is the largest driest area on earth.

Since this is from AP and their source is something called Nature Climate Change, I do not believe any of it. Except maybe the deserts are dry.
SUMAGUM! Who would have thought that?

They used to blame all of this on El Niño and La Niña. You don’t hear much about those anymore.

https://www.denverpost.com/2022/02/09/colorado-weather-checking-in-on-snowpack-and-looking-ahead-to-a-mediocre-snow-forecast/

Snows on the wrong side of the continental divide all that blue snow in the map of the second link when it melts is heading down the Mississippi river system not the Colorado. Those reds and oranges on the west side of the divide are bad news for lake mead and Powell. It will take three or more years of record snowfalls in a row to refill lake Powell and a couple more for mead. Those lakes can hold 5 years of water at full flows of 12 million acre feet per year. They have been short by 6+ million acre feet for a decade nearly now.

Lake mead is at record lows

http://mead.uslakes.info/level.asp

Vegas finished their third intake it sits at 860 feet 35 feet below dead pool where hoover dam cannot pass water down stream via gate. The turbines stop at 1005 only 62 feet of water left to run them with.

They are setting it up for climate emergency.

All nonsense and lies.

If this were true, build dams.

Worse than the 25 year drought of 1275 AD? or the Whitewater Drought of AD 300, or maybe the Fairbank Drought of 500 BC?

worse than the 1930s droughts during the Dust Bowl? maybe the high plains drought of 1831?

Worse than the 1952 drought that drove us off the farm on the High Plains? worse than the 1977 Drought during “The Coming Ice Age” hoax?
Get real! No one believes that nonsense anymore except those new born in the last few decades who have missed the history lessons of the past.

There is a a reason the area of the West was referred to as THE GREAT AMERICAN DESERT in the 1800s.

The climate change industry needs its data-cherry-picking spin meisters, otherwise people might look out of the window and wonder what all the fuss is about .

I hope thats sarcasm, desal won’t change sea level water is not lost it gets used flushed and ends up back in a river flowing into the oceans or put on grass evaporates and rains back down into as river headed for the oceans. Even uses to grow crops those get eaten turned into CO2 amd water by respiration and pissed out as urine to yet again eventually make its way back to the ocean. All water on earth jas beem through the biological cycle at least eight times and back to the ocean. That means every glass of water people drink has been through at least eight other animals om average over geological time.
