Could be “Tell Laura I Love Her” except he deliberately was in a public car race.

Perhaps you were thinking “TEEN Angel”, but that is the boy singing about his girl dying from the car/train wreck.

I first heard these guys on MTV back in the eighties and they made such an impression on me. Definitely one of those bands where I loved every cut on the album. Drank quite a bit of Jack and Bicardi and blew out my Bose 501’s to these guys music...must be enjoyed at maximum volume.
