This is very telling to me. If they had confidence they could keep the Senate in the midterms, I don’t think he would be retiring. I think they may have finally realized it is not looking good for them keeping either the house or the senate after Biden supposedly doing better than he thought he ever would.

Suppose he had decided to hang on till death, as Ginsburg did. After 2024, there will most likely be a Republican president — the Trump restoration, or failing that, someone like DeSantis. Even if we got a Roberts/Kennedy/Kavanaugh type, that person would be far more conservative than Breyer.
So from the left’s perspective, it’s better that Breyer retires now.
