Croatian President Zoran Milanovic has announced that Zagreb will withdraw its troops from NATO contingents stationed in the region if the situation escalates into a full-scale conflict.

Speaking in a televised address on Tuesday, the leader said he saw “reports that NATO – not a separate state, not the United States – is increasing its presence and sending reconnaissance ships.”

He insisted that the Zagreb authorities “have nothing to do with it and we won’t have anything to do with it, I guarantee that.”

“Not only will we not send the army, but if there is an escalation, we will call back to the last Croatian military,” he added. said Milanovic. “It has nothing to do with Ukraine or Russia, it has to do with the dynamics of American domestic politics, [US President] Joe Biden and his administration, which I supported.

Perhaps but any battle against Russia could spill over into Croatia, Iraq and Afghanistan would not be considered battles if a ground war with Russia kicks off

I mean, it wouldn’t take much to spark up yet another Balkans conflict, and I’m sure this is the real reason Croatia wants to keep out of it.

I guarantee if Croats go into Russia, Serbia will attack Croatia.

Then it’s 1990s all over again.

Translation: The fake Ukrainian crisis is a product of US domestic politics and Croatia will not be sucked into a war with Russia. Milanovic adds his gratuitous comment about Biden to say that his position has nothing to do with his personal support of Biden.

Probably. All I know is that I don’t have a dog in this hunt and neither does the American citizen with a son, daughter or grand children.. Not for no Biden diversion scheme. Let Kamala go on over there with her staff and bluster her way through it and work on some kind of border - any border like she’s supposed to have been doing here...Biden can stay in his basement studio.

I believe they require a worthy conflict that is more than backing a corrupt manipulative US regime to bolster up their creds after many failures. I believe that Ukraine is not in NATO anyway.

I also believe NATO is worthless.

When we got into the Balkans conflict in the 1990s in a part of Europe that was not part of NATO at that time, this was going to be the inevitable consequence.

I agree to an extent but when belong to a mutual defense treaty that means you agree to do your part not just when it benefits you

Well do you want another War in the Balkans? Because that’s how you get another War in the Balkans.

NATO should have taken that into account before they made Croatia a member, keeping in mind that Serbia is not a member.

“I wonder if disrupting and splitting up NATO over Ukraine was part of Putin’s master plan or just an unintended consequence”.

That crossed my mind, too. It’s as if Putin in out-foxing them.

“Funny how the US used to have all sorts of plans all over the world and now has to watch from the porch as the big dogs run”.

Yes, we had contingency plans for everything and at one time we were supposed to be able to fight two major wars at once.

Now we are really a “Paper tiger”, as the Chinese called us.

I don’t want any war but before any fighting starts we already have one country running away, we should remember that when voting them out of NATO

A search of the net shows this particular story originated on Russian news media and is being parroted, echoed, and amplified by Russian media and on social media by likely Russian trolls.

The official news for Croatia tells a different story:

PM Says Croatia to Respond “Clearly and Resolutely” if Russia Attacks Ukraine

ZAGREB, 19 Jan 2022 - Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said on Wednesday that Croatia would react “clearly and resolutely” if Russia attacked Ukraine.

Russia has caused concern in Kyiv and the West by amassing troops and equipment near the border with Ukraine and there are fears that it is preparing for an attack. Moscow denies this and says it has the right to deploy its troops on its territory any way it wants.

Speaking in the Croatian parliament, Plenković said that the situation in the east of Ukraine was very worrying and the tensest since 2014 and conflicts between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian rebels.

“Croatia does not want the situation to escalate and it will react clearly and resolutely to prevent any instability,” the PM said without being more specific.

An EU member, Croatia is also a member of NATO which has warned Moscow a number of times that it will face serious consequences if it attacks Ukraine. On several occasions, Zagreb has offered Ukrainian authorities its experience in the peaceful reintegration of the Croatian Danube region, which in the 1990s was under occupation by ethnic Serbs.

Submitting his annual report on meetings of the Council of the EU to the parliament, Plenković said that Croatia would raise the issue of people gone missing in the 1991-95 war as part of Serbia’s EU accession talks.

“When the relevant policy chapters are put on the agenda, we will put the topic in the context of Serbia’s further progress,” he said.

He, added, however, that “it is not wise for a new member in a forum like the EU to block those who act slightly differently than we think they should.”

Speaking of the most important topics of the Council of the EU meetings, Plenković cited the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the response to energy price increases and EU enlargement to the east, including the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He said that in 2021 Croatia made major progress on the path to membership of the Schengen area of passport-free travel and the euro area, noting that this time next year Croatians should be paying in euros in shops.
