Driver who stopped to help when truck carrying 100 lab monkeys crashed in Pennsylvania and put her hand in one of the cages says she now has a cough and pink eye: CDC urges anyone in contact with the macaques to seek medical attention

A truck carrying around 100 monkeys that crashed in Pennsylvania is now sparking fears of infection after a woman who came into contact with the primates began to feel unwell.

Michelle Fallon, from Danville near Scranton, was driving directly behind the vehicle when it crashed, throwing animal crates all over the highway and smashing some to pieces.

Four of the 100 animals escaped and were seen sitting among the wreckage before they fled.

Police say they have now all been accounted for, with three known to have been euthanised.

Fallon said she got out to help both the driver and the animals in their cages, initially believing them to be cats. When she approached and put her hand on the cage, she says the monkey hissed at her.

The day following the accident, Fallon suddenly developed a cough and pink-eye, which became so bad that she had to visit the emergency room at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Can one contract rabies without being bitten or scratched?

The whole situation seems suspicious as hell. Guy driving a pickup truck with a trailer from New York to Missouri (not flying) which means multiple overnight stops on their way to a "CDC approved" lab.

That is odd. Usually they take the infected animals directly to a Chinese restaurant.

Should we start preparing for her Darwin Award?

One news story quoted the woman as saying she was told by another at the scene that the small crates contained cats. She said she spoke to the driver who never warned her to stay away from the animals.

This woman's compassion got her sick. She's started rabies treatment and anti-viral medication:

It looks like a shoddy transport operation that was likely breaking the law.

I can answer the driver part.

A lot of the small shipments now are handled by private contractors. Used to be smaller carriers that did LTLs. Now it is a guy with a 3/4 ton truck and a trailer.

If I had to make a bet, the driver bid on the job, doesn’t have the correct qualifications for the work, but did it anyway. Note, I am not talking immigration status because I have seen a lot of diversity is this racket.

Driver then got into an accident and lost the monkeys . Willing to be the lab boys and girls had no idea it was Jethro and Javier’s F250 that picked up the load.

I can understand the everyone involved thinking that if a barrel of monkeys is fun, a truckload of disease-ridden lab monkeys would be even more fun.

If you’re exposed to infected saliva, sure.

Per the CDC..

People usually get rabies from the bite of a rabid animal. It is also possible, but rare, for people to get rabies from non-bite exposures, which can include scratches, abrasions, or open wounds that are exposed to saliva or other potentially infectious material from a rabid animal.Jun 11, 2019

If you want a disease contained or handled efficiently, get a veterinarian. The CDC, NIH and Fauci have screwed the pooch on this outbreak.
