The Novak Djokovic saga has a new twist, with fellow players starting to turn on the ‘selfish’ world No.1 amid accusations of favourable treatment over his anti-vaccination stance.
As British great Andy Murray called on Djokovic to come clean over the outstanding questions relating to his botched visa documentation, Portugal’s Joao Sousa spoke out on the double standards that have allowed the defending champion to “find a way around (anti-vaccination) rules”.
“I respect that he fights for what he believes and I can be empathetic with what he is going through in Australia, but it’s a bit selfish from him to arrive here as the only player unvaccinated,” Sousa said.
“It’s tough for us players to accept that.
“Many players – not my case – didn’t want to get vaccinated and were forced to do it to be able to play tournaments. He is finding a way around those rules.”
Sousa joined Wimbledon quarter-finalist Marton Fuscovics in publicly questioning Djokovic’s ‘right’ to play at the Australian Open ahead of next week’s tournament.
Fuscovics, speaking with Hungary’s M4Sport challenged Djokovic’s non-vaccination decision and argued that the health and safety of players was the most important aspect in this debate.
“People’s health is paramount, and there are rules that were outlined months ago, namely that everyone should vaccinate themselves – and Djokovic didn’t,” he said.
“From this point of view, I don’t think he would have the right to be here.”

It is funny you mentioned this, as both Canada and the USA require people to have been vaccinated to come into your countries.
And, as far as I can find, neither the USA nor Canada allow natural immunity as reason to get an exception.

No. This is simply incorrect. It was made quite clear numerous times that having had COVID in the last six months was not an exemption from vaccination requirements to enter Australia. It was for certain other purposes.
It was made clear on government websites and it was explicitly and repeatedly made clear in writing to Tennis Australia. The fact that they either couldn't read their correspondence, didn't read the correspondence, or simply chose to lie doesn't change the facts.
He’s a foreigner who wanted to enter Australia. I don’t care what he fears, but he is damned well obliged to follow our laws if he wants to come here.
I will defend my country. I've done it in war by force of arms.
I will defend it against foreign propaganda and lies with the force of my words.
I may lose but I will not surrender to dishonesty and stupidity.
The bottom line to me,a Yank who absolutely *loves* Australia (I once made a half hearted attempt to get permission to settle...which failed),is that this matter damages the image of Australia in at least some parts of the world. The only reason I can think of that it's gone this far is because one or more Aussie politicians (or bureaucrats) think that it will help them politically or career wise in some electoral district that resembles the one that sent AOC to the US House of Representatives.
And just for the record...I'm not bitter about my application having been rejected. It's understandable that an old geezer like me would be seen as a sure drain on the treasury rather than one who'd contribute to it.
Just sayin'...
One didn't want to be vaxxed and is complaining about Djokovic because they weren't as courageous as Djokovic, standing up for their principles against the force of vaccination.
The other one is an idiot who still thinks that vaxxed players can't give and get Covid.
Note my two comments that both Canada and the USA require foreigners to be vaccinated to come into their countries (unless you are an illegal immigrants coming across the border from Mexico). Neither country, that I can find information on their websites, will consider natural immunity as an exception.
Players turn on Australian Open champion over anti-vax stance”
Analogous to the eventual wholesale shunning of the unvaxed here in the US.
Your insulting of the Australian military...
**************************************
I insulted a fool who happened to have previously been in the Australian military
My theory that you two are teenagers who hacked into your parents computer looks more and more likely with every post.
Does Canada or the USA? Those two countries do not allow these as exceptions.
Murray is and always has been a pussy.
“ So much easier to win a tourney when you can eliminate the competition by default.”
Or…. Novak may have an advantage over his fellow players because he isn’t vaxxed. Things that make you go hmmmm .
To hell with your what-about-isms. I am not defending my idiotic, despotic government - they deserve to be tried and hung. I’m talking about a particular instance of stupidity, cowardice, and brutality on the part of the Australian governments and quite a few of the idiotic citizens of Australia.
Now that is really a projection.
He did not have a valid exemption from vaccination requirements to enter Australia under Australian law.
It is that simple, even somebody who resorts to childish insults should be able to grasp it.
First off, we’re not talking about the US or Canada
Second, please admit that Djokovic didn’t do anything wrong.
He honestly told the Australian Government about his medical situation
he didn’t forge the visa, the Australian Government issued it
he told the truth at every point ... that’s why he won his court case
this is looking like petty persecution now
