The remaking of the Massachusetts Republican Party
Bostonherald.com ^ | 1/10/22 | Joe Battenfeld

Posted on 01/11/2022 3:17:16 AM PST by cotton1706

The old Massachusetts Republican Party, the wing of Bill Weld and Charlie Baker, has pretty much evaporated for a new, more red meat conservative party.

And when Baker leaves office next year for a lucrative private-sector job, he’ll be taking with him the last vestiges of the old party.

Bring on Donald Trump and Republicans like Geoff Diehl, because that right now is where the party stands.

Nearly 1.2 million Massachusetts voters stood with Trump in 2020, which amounts to about a third of the vote.

That’s clearly not enough to win elections, but maybe Massachusetts Republicans have had too much of Baker and his cautious, milquetoast style of governing. Baker and Karyn Polito only won the election by essentially being moderate Democrats in Republican clothing. It’s a weak brew.

Diehl is counting on a transformed party to win the 2022 gubernatorial nomination, and unless another prominent Republican like former U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling jumps in, Diehl will be the heavy favorite.

There’s a lot of talk about the fractured Republican Party, but voters don’t care about internal party dissension and disarray — they just want the party to stand for something. Only the insiders know who controversial party chairman Jim Lyons really is.

The Massachusetts version of the Grand Old Party hasn’t been taken seriously for decades and the watered-down version can’t get bills passed in the Legislature and has become the butt of jokes.

Diehl has the endorsement of Trump and wants to bring the former president to Massachusetts to campaign for him.

What a spectacle that would be — Trump in the middle of far-left Massachusetts, taking on Democrats like Elizabeth Warren and Michelle Wu and Marty Walsh — making them the poster children for liberal America.

Go west of Worcester and aside from the college professors, one can find quite a few Conservatives in Massachusetts.

There are lots of blue collar types east of Worcester as well, mostly the union types, that have been about the Dems and unions for years. That all started to change with President Trump.

However, as the article states, there just isn’t enough of them to make much of a difference right now.

Time will tell

A waste of time and money. Diehl should give up now.

I travel the western suburbs of Boston daily. Brookline...Newton...Needham...Wellesley...Belmont...and others. Every other house sports a "What We Believe" yard sign and a Tesla (or Volvo...or Range Rover) in the driveway.

Greater Boston makes up more than half the states population. Add to it the Pioneer Valley (labeled "Happy Valley" by the great Boston talk show host,Howie Carr) in the western part of the state and you know that this state is lost.Lost forever!

Last summer, I did a good bit of riding around around the area west of the CT River, stopping for lunch, soda, or snacks in local stores. In talking to locals, I found there was a general dislike of Trump, which was a perceptual change from when he first started running. Among the women I talked to, the dislike almost bordered on a visceral hatred. Aside from all the negative media coverage (e.g., Russia, Russia, Russia) the thing people seemed to dislike the most about Trump was his tweeting, denigrating people he disliked and tendency to exaggerate.

Whatever support Trump had when he first ran evaporated with the last election. Were he to run again against Biden again in 2024, I'd have to bet that Biden would, unfortunately, win again in that area. It's a visceral, emotional reaction rather than a rational, logical one. Also, the MA republican party is a phantom with not much to say against the liberal politicians who promise everything.

In Massachusetts the thinking goes like this: “Are the Republicans going to get my cousin a job on the MTA?””

I was in a bar in Ayer, MA on Saturday.
Ayer is right next door to Fort Devens Army base.
This was as blue collar bar that could be. About 15 beers on tap, and NOT all IPAs(crap). Best Korean Chicken wings I have had in years. Four different TVs in the bar. Each playing a different sporting event. A couple soldiers having lunch dressed in fatigues.

These are Pats, Bruins, Red Sox and Celtics fans(in that order). Salt of the earth types. There were no Teslas in the parking lot. Pick up trucks and SUVs. These are the people that run landscaping companies, plow snow, paint houses, work on cars, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, welders, etc.

What most Freepers don’t know about “liberal” Massachusetts is that it may be the most segregated state in the entire US—would make George Wallace and Lester Maddox blush.

The numbers speak for themselves:

True. I live in what was probably the last red town on the South Shore. Last election, it went blue. Too many people who blindly vote for the name with the D after their name. I’ve said for over four decades that Satan himself would get elected with a D after his name. Stupid people. A depopulation, of some sort, would need to take place to purge the state of these dangerous fools before any political change could take place.

Through a FOIA request, one of my nephews discovered that the majority of MA voting machines were from Dominion.

Having gone to school in western Mass, one has to realize just how much influence all the colleges have.

I’m the Happy Valley, as it’s known, there are 5 schools: UMASS, Amherst College, Hampshire College, My Holyoke and Smith.

When I was in the neighborhood, UMASS was the ayate school that the middle class kids went to. The other 4 were for the rich kids. Uber rich in some cases. And Liberal AF, then, so I can’t imagine how bad they’ve become.

Great video of D’Souza taking apart the rich white liberals at Amherst College.

In that area, most of the folks are either going to the school, employed by the school or retired liberals living in their liberal college town bubble.

Go talk to the maintenance guys working at UMASS or any of the other schools. Talk to the cops, fireman and plumbers. You might get a different take on things.
