Democratic Politicians Protest Pittsburgh Being Considered For 2024 Republican National Convention

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — After the announcement Pittsburgh may be one of several cities where the 2024 Republican National Convention could be held, local Democratic politicians are speaking out.

On Sunday, both District 9 City Councilman Rev. Ricky V. Burgess and Congressional candidate Jerry Dickinson publicly stated that they are opposed to the idea of the city hosting the convention.

Burgess wrote a letter to VisitPITTSBURGH, which he says is encouraging the RNC to happen in the city, and asked them to withdraw their interest:

“As disturbing as it is to learn that the Republican National Committee is considering Pittsburgh for its 2024 National Convention, it is appalling that VisitPittsburgh, which receives millions of dollars in tax revenue each year, is leading this charge.”

“VisitPITTSBURGH has inquired about submitting a bid to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention, but at this time, we have not been invited by the Democratic National Committee to submit a formal proposal,” a spokesperson for VisitPITTSBURGH said on Friday.

Meanwhile, Dickinson criticized new Democratic Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey and Allegheny County Executive Fitzgerald for comments they allegedly made in support of hosting the convention.

“Mayor Gainey and County Executive Fitzgerald want to offer our city to the Republican Party to use as a megaphone and national stage to voice anti-democratic values months before Republicans likely attempt to overturn the 2024 election,” he said. “I’m calling on the Mayor and County Executive to renounce the allure of big business in the name of safeguarding our democracy.”

It’s illegal to be a member of the Republican Party.

Tell me Mr. Chinese Turtle Federal Senate minority leader along with the Majority led Republican congressional State leadership in Pennsylvania going to do about this while needing to reign down hell upon this tyrant and traitor who even suggested this evil.

I presume it’s the usual Republican response of rolling over and very politely asking for another hard swat in the buttocks.

You hold conventions in tight match-ups.

Republicans should ignore meaningless twaddle from Democrats and move forward with what they want.

My two cents worth:

The geographic center of the United States is a point approximately 20 mi (32 km)
north of Belle Fourche, South Dakota at 44°58′2.07622″N 103°46′17.60283″W.

A perfect location to represent the entire USA.

You generally want to place your convention in a state that you need to win. The Pubs will win in Florida no matter who is the nominee, so there is no reason to hold it in Florida.

Pittsburgh makes sense. The party will not win Pittsburgh, but could drive its margins up in the surrounding areas and the state to help win its electoral votes.

On the other hand, by holding the convention in Florida, you can showcase the success' of Florida and the reasons. But it is hot and humid in the summer, so who wants to go to Florida? I vote for Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh and surrounding Allegheny Co are a blue stain in the sea of Red that is the rest of SW PA.

As liberal as it is, it's nothing compared to NYC, Portland, LA and others of their ilk.

One night of "peaceful" protests and a couple of annoying marches was pretty much it.

Seems the commie mayor let the police do their job.

Why does the GOP always pick Leftist strongholds to host it’s convention?

Western PA is a good idea. And if the evil party is complaining, that is a good thing as well.

Democrats’ idea of a democracy (or republic for you nit-pickers) seems to be having a one-party state. Awesome.

If the GOP had a spine, they would hold it where they want and tell the RATS to pound sand.

Almost all big cities are run by leftists, so there isn't much of a choice.

But the 2016 GOP Convention in Cleveland - a very blue city - was very successful. Democrat Mayor supported it, rolled out the red carpet, and we won the state easily.

I think Pittsburgh is a great idea. The city itself is blue, but the surrounding region is very red. Great place to go to rally the industrial Midwest for the GOP nominee.

And I know Pennsylvania is isn't the Midwest. But culturally, S.W. Pa. actually is.

Yeah: “And if the evil party is complaining, that is a good thing as well.”

I was going to say that but I didn’t want to get all long-winded: “Is it bothering them? That’s a positive sign!”

When I was growing up, Pittsburgh didn’t have enough hotel space for a large convention. Maybe it’s different now.

I might believe North America, though even that is iffy - but CONUS? I don’t think so. How did your reference conclude that it was the ‘geographic center’? Just curious.
