Former Gov. Christine Todd Whitman (R-NJ) said Wednesday that former President Donald Trump’s conditional endorsement in the Alaska gubernatorial race is a sign that the Republican Party is headed in a scary direction.
Trump a day before endorsed Gov. Mike Dunleavy (R), but only on one condition: He must refuse to support Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) in her reelection bid in 2022. Murkowski of course voted earlier this year to convict the former president on a charge of incitement of insurrection following the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot.
“Alaska needs Mike Dunleavy as Governor now more than ever,” Trump said in a Tuesday statement. “He has my Complete and Total Endorsement but, this endorsement is subject to his non-endorsement of Senator Lisa Murkowski who has been very bad for Alaska, including losing ANWAR, perhaps the most important drilling site in the world, and much else. In other words, if Mike endorses her, which is his prerogative, my endorsement of him is null and void, and of no further force or effect!”

Whitman then compared Trump’s contingent support for Dunleavy to the actions of a dictator.
“If that isn’t the definition of trying to be a dictator, I don’t know what is. It’s a scary time for our democracy. And as you point out, Poppy, and very rightly, we ought to be worried and watching closely what’s happening down ballot. It’s not just Congress. It’s not just the Senate. It is the governors, it’s the secretaries of state and the attorneys general. It’s important, all the way down to the local level.”

Agree, I can’t think of a conditional endorsement like this in the past. Makes me think that someone tipped off Trump as to their strategy in Alaska to try to have it both ways.

Because THEY own the media and they can choose whatever Republicans THEY want to choose. If we owned the media, we likely could dredge up has-been Democrats who now support our side, but we do not.
I also think the process is that Whitman or someone working with her contacts the networks and tells them that Whitman has some choice words about Trump (or whoever they’re attacking at the time). It is up to the network to decide who gets air time...their choice.
This seems to be the current modus operandi - if you can’t legitimately argue and win your case then attempt to scare the living shit out of people.

I thought Whitman was an idiot years ago.
Why do these people get any attention, let alone OURS.
I didn’t like the move but the reaction means it was the right move. Now his primary opponent can take a strong stance against Murkowski and force Deleaney to openly and very publicly take a side. It ends up being an referendum on the RINO of the Senate and that will have an impact on both races.

Our BIGGEST MISTAKE in the post-WW2 time period was the ‘Greatest’ Generation ignoring the Leftists in this country, and thinking they were cute, but powerless young hippies who would grow out of it and become normal Americans.
Well, they certainly did grow up, but they never changed and they are FAR from powerless.
We have to watch the Left, to have any chance of righting this country. In the case of Whitman, we may not think much of her, but the people who run the GOP likely invite her to ALL their functions. She has power where it counts, whether we like it or not.
My poor wife tires of my saying the same.
Finding a democrat who says anything other than “our democracy” is an impossible mission. It’s the political speech of the age to convince any and all of “our democracy”.
