China closes ranks in 'battle for rare earth control'.......(rare earths are essential to manufacturing electronics)
Asia Times ^ | 12/27/2021 | Gabriel Honranda

China announced plans to merge three of its main rare earth metal companies, Minmetals Rare Earth, Chinalco Rare Earth & Metals Co, and China Southern Rare Earth Group Co into a yet-to-be-named company.

Rare earths are elements which are critical for the manufacture of electronic components and high-tech alloys necessary for civilian and defence applications. They are not rare per se, but they are often found in combination with other elements, with the extraction process being expensive and polluting.

Presently, China enjoys a near-monopoly of rare earths, as in 2019 it produced 90% of the world’s rare earths, alloys, and permanent magnets.

Chinese is only in control of rare earths, because the West effectively gave up production of them. This is due to short-term business thinking and short-term management cost savings, government stupidity, and overbearing licensing and environmental regulations.

Actually, it’s to further the world revolution rather than “stupidity”. The same people who control Wuhan-virus lockdowns all over the world would have been in control of that move.

Hanlon’s razor is only true in reverse. This has been proven true in practice.

Chinese is only in control of rare earths, because the West effectively gave up production of them. This is due to short-term business thinking and short-term management cost savings, government stupidity, and overbearing licensing and environmental regulations.

The Mountain Pass Mine in California used to produce almost the entire world production of rare earths, which are not particularly rare in reality.

But there are always some radioactive elements mixed in with the ones you want and for some reason digging them up from one godforsaken sport in the desert and re-burrying them in another godforsaken spot gets the greenies panties in a wad.

The have been some leaks in the piping, but nothing so serious as to cause the alarm the greens have raised. And we know how to fix plumbing leaks.

Just one more way in which the enviros have managed to slam the window on our own appendage...

“which are not particularly rare in reality. “

True, a lot of the Karens on this seem not to know that.

Very true! Mostly thorium mixed it, which has almost no commercial use presently, but imposes high greenie government costs. In theory thorium reactors fix those economics, make cost effective (zero carbon for those care) energy AND reduce radioactive waste.

Presently, China enjoys a near-monopoly of rare earths,

Because the number one supplier of rare earths gave up rare earth mining to protect the environment by making them Federal Preserves and to please certain campaign donors during the Bill Clinton reign of terror.

Lefties need to have it shoved into their eyes, ears, noses, and throats that the materials their electric cars and such are so dependent on are produced at great cost to downtrodden and enslaved people, and catastrophic consequence to the environment, neither of which the Communist Chinese government gives a Flying Philadelphia F-— about.

A good video documentary on the effects on miners and refiners, and the land around them would do wonders to knock popular perceptions back into realistic perspective.

Yes...

Other countries interest in how China uses it’s people is not about their people....it’s about competition, manufacturing costs etc. or acquiring resources. Leverage is the game...and $$$$.

US company CEO’S chose to move their production to China.....profit the incentive. Reasons can vary but it’s always the dollar profit that’s the bottom line.

US consumers still buy products made in China every day....though we know how their employees are abused and used.

I don’t see the equation changed much under any leftist leadership here.
