At his peak, Usain Bolt could legitimately stand up and say: “There are X billion people in the world today, and I can run faster than any of them.”

Meanwhile … the anonymous, forgotten female sprinter who competed at the same time could say: “There are X billion people in the world today, and I can run faster than the 50% I’m willing to compete against.”

Kinda takes a lot of the shine off the accomplishments of the female sprinter, doesn’t it?

It;s like redshirting or wrestling. You compete in your own class. That way many more people can enjoy working hard & training for a goal. It’s not a zero sum game.
