Australia is on the brink of a major crisis that could see tens of thousands of vehicles pulled off the road, grocery supplies dwindle and prices skyrocket, with every citizen set to be impacted.

On Friday, news.com.au reported on the urea shortage facing the nation, with experts warning the fiasco would devastate the transport industry within weeks.

But the full extent of the nightmare is becoming clearer, with the shortage set to also affect agriculture, power generation, the trades, healthcare and everyday consumers.

“The Aztecs used to sacrifice virgins to their gods, now the Libs are sacrificing their civilization to their make up gods. Seen any Aztecs lately?”

Hell, ya seen any virgins lately!? In this day-and-age, they are as rare as hen’s teeth!

Looks like ammonia and water will do in a pinch if needed. Of course there is no reason do do so unless it’s in a state of emergency, but ammonia windshield washer solvent or ammonia mixed with distilled water will work if you ever HAVE to get the vehicle moving again.

“What happens when you put water into your urea bottle?”

Similar to upstream/downstream O2 sensors in a Gas engine, the SCR system has two temp sensors, pre and post DEF injector. Two pressure sensors, pre and post particulate filter. Then finally the DEF injector itself. Any of which failing or “being out of expected values” causes the system to fail.

These value will only be within parameters with the proper mixture of DEF.

What happens when you put water into your urea bottle? Just curious, I mean of course it will increase exhaust fumes and particulate matter, but would the vehicle know the difference, and would it actually hurt the diesel engine to do this?

Just dilute it

Also pee in the bottle....Urine is high in urea.

Bottles of urine litter the interstate freeways.....free supply.

Only with careful government central planning can one end up with shortages in something like pee. Put it under government control and I’m sure they could create a sand shortage.

Trucks can easily be modified to NOT need urea. The question is whether Western governments have the will to do that modification, as it means back to old days of diesels putting out smoke.

“In the case of DEF, if you run out, your vehicle goes into limp mode and won’t go over 30 mph until you fill up with DEF. Granted you get hundreds of miles of warning you’re running out, but it’s crazy running out of an emission control solution will disable your vehicle.”

If not for the limp mode, no one would refill their DEF. We can ‘thank’ the EPA for this ‘feature’.

No problem. Aqueous urea is available anywhere copious amounts of liquid refreshments are served.

Encourage folks there to drink more been. That will increase the supply of urea.

Every diesel truck that I have bought since introduction of DEF have had “deletes” done. Meaning removal of all the crap that restricts exhaust flow, carbon injection into the motor from exhaust and so on.

Gee, mister, wouldn't that be illegal?

Wanna bet that's not the real reason the ChiComs are doing it...

*cough* gunpowder and explosives *cough*

Vehicles do not start without def. There is no limp mode in my truck.

May depend on brand. My F-I-L has a 2019 Duramax and he was ten miles out of the next town on the freeway when it went into limp-home mode and limited him to 10MPH until he could get more DEF. The stations out in the middle of nowhere really rip you off for it, too.

With all of the sheep and beer-swilling Diggers, how could Oz be out of urea?

The DEF fluid debacle has struck me as well.

DEF fluid sensors in the tank froze up a few winters ago. Major PITA.
