Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN)Mount Semeru, a volcano on Indonesia's East Java Province, erupted on Saturday, spewing a column of smoke and ash while displacing thousands from the area, authorities said. The eruption has killed at least one person and wounded 41 others, Indah Masdar, deputy head of Lumajang District, said in a press conference held in Jakarta. Budi Santosa, Head of Disaster Management of East Java Province, said earlier on Saturday that two sub districts had been "badly affected" by the volcano's eruption.

Not often, they don't. A few volcanos give advance warning, but even then volcanologists can not be sure. The best thing to do is to avoid living right next to an active volcano, even if it hasn't erupted in decades.

Well, actually, I am not having a vacation. The hubs and I work in Sentani, Papua, Indonesia, and have done since 1995. We have very good friends there, even a few who are moslems. I am more concerned about the ash cloud blowing east and will it disrupt flights. We get out of quarantine on Dec. 26 and will catch a direct red-eye to Sentani. There are challenges to living cross-culturally, but ... as the guy said as he was jumping out of a skyscraper, “So far, so good!”
