Belgium has confirmed a case of the new, heavily mutated variant of the virus that causes Covid-19, according to one of the country’s leading virologists.
Marc Van Ranst, who works with the Rega Institute for Medical Research, said a sample was confirmed as the novel B.1.1.529 variant in a traveler who returned from Egypt on Nov. 11. The patient first showed symptoms on Nov. 22.
Belgium is home to the capital of the European Union in Brussels.
The variant was first detected in a small number of samples in South Africa, according to the World Health Organization. There were also reports on Friday morning that cases had been found in Israel and Hong Kong.

Not each and every variant has been or was reported; yes the particularly virulent strains were but death stats weren’t published or reported day after day after day; complete changes to our everyday lives or society as a whole didn’t happen. The reaction to covid has been utterly irrational.
I agree.. the powers that be have manipulated this thing for political purposes. Most of us here on FR know that. My contention is we shouldn’t go to the opposite extreme and pretend there isn’t a problem out there, there is.

Growing weed illegally has never changed in Giles County. Ever workman who came to the house gave me tips on growing. Blacksburg was inundated with Branch Covidians especially on the Town Council. They are probably thrilled about the new variant.
