Thank you all most kindly for your replies. This is quite disconcerting (understatement)!

Okay, so they theoretically could bring federal charges (hate crime?) and there’s the old saying about grand juries indicting ham sandwiches. But would they want to risk another trial with a regular jury finding him not guilty? Surely they would rather just let the story die?

I hope Nadler is just making noises for the cameras and they won’t follow through with actual charges. Perhaps it is a vain hope.

The irony of this is that Nadler is a member of the House judiciary committee, and so should understand that bringing civil rights charges against a single individual defendant is extraordinarily difficult.

Then again, it's Nadler, and he's an idiot.
