The VP office is a completely independent power base. The President cannot fire or in any way remove the Vice President. A VP can only be removed through the Congressional impeachment process.
If it’s true VP Harris is being considered for SCOTUS, the analysis may be wrong. Far from under the bus, that may have been the plan all along.

On the other hand, it is an independent power base with no actual power, other than casting tie breaking votes in the Senate. Historically, that rarely ever comes up, except when you have a 50/50 split in the Senate like you do now. Any other authority given to the VP (including all authority in the executive branch) is purely at the discretion of the President.
If the President dies (or becomes incapacitated), then the VP automatically becomes President (or acting President) and is no longer acting as VP.
