Great Lakes 'have a fever' as first lake-effect snow sets a record
Accuweather ^ | November 4, 2021 | Jesse Ferrell

Posted on 11/04/2021 8:58:46 AM PDT by ProtectOurFreedom

The first significant lake-effect snow of the season dropped nearly a foot of snow near the shores of the Great Lakes Tuesday into Wednesday. The snowfall was enough to transform parts of Michigan's Lower Peninsula into a winter wonderland and break into the record books at one weather station in Michigan.

Snow totals topped 11 inches in northern parts of northern Michigan. Gaylord, Michigan, picked up 11.7 inches of snow on Tuesday, which set a record for the heaviest snowfall in a calendar day in November. That amount also ranked as the sixth highest single-day snowfall in any month. Records have been kept at the National Weather Service (NWS) office there since 1998. Into Wednesday, temperatures remained in the low to mid-30s in Gaylord, as snow flurries continued to fall. The average high temperature there at this time of year is 47 degrees Fahrenheit, but temperatures couldn't make it above the mid-30s Tuesday and Wednesday, though the area was poised for a rebound in the days ahead, according to the AccuWeather forecast.

This is just the beginning of what could be a blockbuster lake-effect snow season, according to AccuWeather forecasters. With few cold outbreaks in October, each of the Great Lakes has a fever, so to speak. With water temperatures several degrees above normal, most of the lakes have set new records for this time of year according to NOAA CoastWatch, which maintains records back to 1995.

“ And...really...Gaylord is not subject to “lake effect snows” being some 120+ miles from Lake Michigan.”
——————————————————————————

I’m 16 miles North East of Gaylord. Gaylord is our main hub.

We get 12 feet of snow a season. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.
We are in a major snow belt.

If you’re from the Metro Detroit Area, you are a lot farther than 90 minutes away……try 4-5 hours.

Adam’s Center on Tug Hill is the snowiest place in the US.

They regularly get snowfall rates of 5” per hour.

We saw that a few times when we lived in Oswego County. You can literally watch the snow pile up.

“ SNOW IN NOVEMBER?????

Noooooo”
————————————————————————————————

I’m 16 miles Northeast of Gaylord.

We can get snow as early as October and as late as May.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin
As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most
With a crew and good captain well seasoned
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ship's bell rang
Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the captain did too
T'was the witch of November come stealin'

The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashin'
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain
In the face of a hurricane west wind
When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin'
"Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya"
At seven PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said
"Fellas, it's been good to know ya"
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters
Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the maritime sailors' cathedral
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early

“ Snow, in northern MI, in November.

We’ve never seen it in history.”
————————————————————————————————

I know….this is no big deal.

I’m near Gaylord.

3 years ago Deer Season was “cancelled” but not officially because on opening day there was so much snow no one could walk or move in it.

The DNR asked land owners if they were cutting down tree to make sure the buds of the small limbs were on top of the snow for the deer because we got so much snow the deer and Elk had a hard to fattening up for full winter.

11.7” Can happen in Gaylord in the lower peninsula, but isn’t much for Houghton, MI, in the center of that little rabbit ear peninsula that sticks into Lake Superior. They’ve had annual snowfalls of 28’ (yes, FEET). Don’t worry, after a few feet it does start to melt in if the ground is warm enough, but I do have an old picture somewhere of the snow within a few feet of the top of a power line.

When I was up at Michigan Tech there, the locals wouldn’t shovel their first 2’ of snow off the sidewalks. Once that much had accumulated, they would bring out planks and put them on top of the snow, THEN shovel that...

You have 5 days to the remembrance.

I have Gordon queued-up in my calendar for the morning of Nov 11.
Plays at 0700.

Does the Cathedral still hold the Edmund Fitzgerald memorial?
It did when I was working at the RenCen...went there in 1999 and 2000 (walking distance from the office).
Quite moving if you know anyone in the maritime service.

Today?
Likely relegated to some “white supremacy conspiracy” and shuffled off-stage.

Yep, Elk………..we have the largest herd in Michigan.

They winter on my land.

Kinda surprised you don’t know that. Ya oughta come up once in a while.

I’d give you a tour.

Elk are massive animals. They’re about 4 times larger than a deer.

If you hunt them, you’re only allowed to take One Elk in Michigan in your lifetime.

I know a hunting guide, she’s real young but does a T.V. Show (Big Boys T.V.) and she always has success.

https://www.9and10news.com/2015/03/02/downstate-man-admits-to-poaching-elk-in-otsego-county/

My land borders Pigeon State Forrest, Otsego County. Gaylord is the County Seat.

https://www.mlive.com/news/2019/11/dnr-seeks-information-about-bull-elk-poached-in-northern-michigan.html

Every Deer season it seems some downstater poaches an Elk…….

https://www.upnorthvoice.com/outdoors/2017/01/dnr-2016-elk-hunting-season-recap/

An Adult Bull is very large. They are also extremely aggressive and have been known to charge vehicles.

If given a choice between running into a Bull Elk or a Female Bear with a Cub………most people up here would prefer the Bear.

"I’m guessing that the lakes are warmer because it was a warm summer. OK, now that we answered that, WHY was it such a hot summer?"

According to the EPA it isn't, taken from their website. that is the thing about these stories, they sensationalize whatever they can to go along with what is happening in the news. Climate summit happening this week? Well, lets write a story that will tie into that and a headline that will scare people into clicking on it. the fact is that the water temperatures have their own set of rules that factor in a lot of things besides air temperature.

Wind, turbidity, cloud cover, rainfall, any good fisherman can tell you that we can see the temps vary at different thermoclines by way mare than just air temps. they are talking about lake effect snow early, well, a really cold snap that drops the air temps before the lakes cool off will give you a larger than average snowfall, that is all it is.

Bingo! That's what I've been thinking, Fokker. You're as near Gaylord as it gets.

I submit this for the soundtrack when they turn your diary into a full length feature film on the Hallmark channel.

And, I’m not as near GAY-lord as Mr.Chase.

I am —in fact— 90 minutes from that grand city along 1-75/US-127.
I have a tendency to drive quicker than most.
