Gov. J.B. Pritzker has declared gun violence in Illinois a public health crisis with an executive order.
Officials on Monday unveiled a $250 million investment to implement a public safety plan over the next 3 years, and curtail gun violence around the state.
According to data from the 2020 Uniform Crime Report, the crime rate in Illinois was 6.9% higher than the overall national crime rate.
There were a total of 1,151 murders committed in Illinois in 2020, up 38% from the previous year. Chicago, a city struggling with high rates of gun violence, was the setting of 774 of those murders, a more than 50% increase from 2019.

Maybe he should concentrate of drug overdoses. They kill like 10x more people, but we hardly hear about them.
She ain’t lookin’ like she’s missed too many meals there either.
Prohibit blacks from owning guns. Racist! Unconstitutional! But I’m betting the gun violence in Chicago would plummet if it were to be enforced. OTOH, they don’t follow the law anyway so it may just be a pipe dream.
Public health crisis == constitutional rights suspended for the duration, which is forever.
Nope, it’s a real photo from a Chicago-area media outlet. During his campaign for gov., one of the first ads Pritzker released mentioned his weight — in a light-hearted way — knowing it would be an issue. His weight seems to go up and down a bit, and this photo was taken when he was on a major “up.”
idiot governor.
but issuing such garbage “declarations” is useful as an excuse or “cover” enabling the gov steal or mis-direct more of our tax money to his own special interest “causes”
Good bye, constitutional rights. Unless, things change, expect CDC, OHSA and others to mandate people turn in their firearms or loose their jobs, be bared from public services and events, etc.
It’s really just a Chicago problem, down state in many areas is waaayyyyy safer.
Champaign-Urbana has turned into Chicago south since the Floyd fiasco and/or the mask edict.
That’s gotta be scary for peeps with kids at Univ of Ill.
Why aren’t automobile accidents a “public health crisis”?
Most shootings seem bo be away from campus.
