I do think Republicans have earned their vote in representing their interests but mostly as a matter of principle and not influence. Not sure. He said something like he didn’t “want to put the country through that”. People I knew then thought it was because JFK was the first Catholic to win, and Nixon thought he would be perceived as a bigot of he challenged.
