“Wonder why Nixon chose not to challenge.”

Not sure. He said something like he didn’t “want to put the country through that”. People I knew then thought it was because JFK was the first Catholic to win, and Nixon thought he would be perceived as a bigot of he challenged.

At that time, the Catholic card as it related to perv JFK was as powerful as the race card is now.

I can see where that (his being the first Catholic) would certainly come into play....for the ‘win’.
