White employees of AT&T have been told to read an article saying that they are racist, are told to confess to their 'white privilege' and acknowledge 'systemic racism,' and must engage with set texts or else they will be penalized in their performance reviews.
AT&T, in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder, introduced an internal program called Listen Understand Act.
John Stankey, the CEO of AT&T, wrote to the company's 230,000 employees in an April 2021 email, obtained by journalist Christopher Rufo and published on his website.
Stankey, who took over as CEO in July 2020, urged his workers to make the most of the resources provided by AT&T's anti-racism portal.
'As individuals, we can make a difference by doing our part to advance racial equity and justice for all,' he wrote.
'If you are looking for tools to better educate and inform yourself on racial equality, resources are available at Listen. Understand. Act.
'We also encourage you to actively participate in our recently launched Equality First learning experience, a new initiative to increase awareness and action around our value to Stand for Equality.'
Most employees are not forced to engage with the Listen Understand Act program, but managers at AT&T are now assessed annually on diversity issues - with mandatory participation in programs such as discussion groups, book clubs, mentorship programs, and race reeducation exercises, according to Rufo's source.
The source told Rufo that employees are asked to sign a loyalty pledge to 'keep pushing for change.'
They are encouraged to sign up to 'intentions' such as 'reading more about systemic racism' and 'challenging others' language that is hateful.'
The source, described as a senior employee, said: 'If you don't do it, you're a racist.'

i got caught up in that crap
september 1973 my old man got me in to test for a motorized messenger at Pac tel, i tested very high, but didnt get the job because i was the wrong color, now fast forward to early 1979, my brother, his wife and my wife and me all went to take a test for jobs, all three got jobs but me, oh and my brother skin tone is several shades darker then mine..
When Professor Bret Weinstein was called a white supremacist, he said Jews are not white, they are Jewish. Perhaps John Stankey, who was raised in a Jewish household, does not consider himself white.
Before “The Split” on 1/1/84, there was what was called the “paper split.” The dept. I worked in, Special Services, included TTY/Data and I followed the machines. From June ‘83 until divestiture, every piece of paper that I handled (except my paycheck) had the heading of ABI (American Bell Inc.) It’s as if we were sub-contracted out to ABI yet were still employed by NYTel.
After a law suit, ABI became known as ATTIS and IIRC, Bell Labs, WECo and TTY Corp. were spun off into Lucent a bit later.
Having Bell Labs was the main reason I chose to follow the machines to AT&T rather than stay with the wires in NYTel. Bell Labs was VERY well respected in my dept.
Big mistake....HUGE mistake.
Once ATTIS was separated from Bell Labs and having to deal with the atrocious management there, I knew the handwriting was on the wall and a few years later, I walked. Got back in to NYTel (NYNEX) and finished as a cable splicer when more idiot management decided that the reason *that* company was doing poorly was all the 50 yr olds...so they made us an offer I couldn’t refuse. By the time they got around to making good on that offer, NYNEX had been taken over by Bell Atlantic, the old (NYNEX) management were gone and the new management there realized they couldn’t survive with all the knowledge and experience they would lose so they REALLY sweetened the deal if we would hang around for two more years. Sadly, by that time I was too involved with the care of my folks so I couldn’t take advantage of the new offer and I left in 1999.
I'm certain that had *nothing* to do with it.
i know a lot of people have to put up with a lot of sh*t today for a job...if you look at it as you have to then more power to ya...
at one time work was rewarding, fun and it paid well, with recognition that was deserved! There was the teamwork focus by all...pay levels was not a concern - EVERYONE had the same goal at mabell - SERVICE to the CUSTOMER 24x7 all year long forever how long it took to get the job done!
And then the gov’t started climbing on there backs in late 60s and early 70s...yea and their was money to be made...guess BIG TECH today don’t have the same worries today ATT had back then - monopolies have a free ride today!
yes it did.. pissed my old man off even more, pops retired in 1982, took his stock with him too.
