Your Columbus post ... sailing the ocean, etc. ..... if you like history, there is a podcast called “The Pirate History Podcast”. It is loaded with history - I don’t know how the guy does all the research he does. Lots of sailing, lots of ocean. The pirates are not the swashbuckling “Disney” type pirates. I’m on episode 115 and we haven’t gotten to the ones most people would mention if you asked them to name a few pirates: Blackbeard, Bonney, the Atlantic coast pirates, etc.

There are lots of grand adventures on the seas ... Mediterranean, Caribbean, Pacific, & Atlantic. Miraculous escapes, tales of survival, incredible good luck & bad, great tacticians - military & otherwise. There are ‘privateers’ (approved pirating), buccaneers, and then actual pirates ... thin line between all of them. You could go out legally to privateer (king’s permission) and while you’re at sea, a treaty is signed & you are now illegally raiding Spanish treasure ships ... communication was slow in those days! It’s all just fascinating. I always loved the history teachers who went beyond the usual history books - this podcast is beyond the history books & into journals, letters, lesser known sources, etc.

Anyway, I am thoroughly enjoying The Pirate History Podcast. It doesn’t hurt that Matt has a wonderful voice & a good sense of humor - he does a fantastic job.

To me the outage was a planned ‘let’s see how you not like having us available ploy”. To divert from the bad news they knew was coming.

Like any other incident where congress becomes involved it was hyped and then buried by the MSM.

Growing up, I had this book written from the first person’s perspective on American history.

I remember the first story was from the log of Columbus’s first journey, and was great, almost suspenseful. He wrote about (on October 10th) first the hint of the smell of land, then seeing land birds fly over, then, on the 11th, tree branches in the water, and as the sun set, a light or perhaps a fire out on the horizon. Finally, while still dark, in the early hours of October 12th, 1492, a young sailor yelled out “Land ho!”. The sharp-eyed lad could see the dark trees and lighter sand beach against the dark water and sky.

Always inspired me.

So CBS’s Pollster Anthony Salvanto is on Face the Nation.

Wonder how he’ll spin Brandon’s poll numbers?

How far does Bama fall. You know the networks want them and GA in the playoff so my guess is drop to 6 or 7.

That is a great Map. It would be very eye opening to see a similar map with the Counties in 3D based on population.

Your map shows just how empty most of the U.S. Land mass actually is

ESPN power rankings:

1. Georgia

2. Iowa

3. Cincinnati

4. Oklahoma

5. Alabama

6. Michigan

7. Michigan State

8. Ohio State

9. Kentucky

10. Penn State

11. Oregon

When the dust clears, I see GA, AL, Ohio State, and either Cincinnati or Oregon in the playoffs. Cincinnati will go undefeated during the regular season due to a weak schedule. Oklahoma will get knocked off by someone, e.g., Baylor, Oklahoma State, or a rematch with Texas in the Big 12 final. Iowa will get beat by Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game. AL will defeat GA in SEC championship game.

The winner of the the SEC West will play the winner of the SEC East.

That will probably be Alabama and Georgia respectively, so the playoff between them will be BEFORE the actual (so-called) playoffs bowls are run.

Around Four-Fifths of All U.S. Metro Areas Grew Between 2010 and 2020 Some good data at this link from 2020 Census.

Over the last decade, the nation grew at its slowest rate since the 1930s, a slowdown broadly reflected in local area 2020 Census population counts released today.

Less than half of the nation’s 3,143 counties or equivalents gained population from 2010 to 2020, while the populations of around four-fifths of metro areas grew during the time period.

In 2020, 86% of the U.S. population lived in metropolitan statistical areas, up from 85% in 2010. Another 8% lived in micropolitan statistical areas, down from 9% in 2010.

The 10 largest metro areas all grew between 2010 and 2020, led by two in Texas: Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land each grew by approximately 20%.

Five counties (metro areas in parentheses) gained at least 300,000 people during that period (2010-2020): Harris County, Texas (Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land); Maricopa County, Arizona (Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler); King County, Washington (Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue); Clark County, Nevada (Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise); and Tarrant County, Texas (Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington).

California’s Los Angeles County remained the largest county in 2020, crossing the 10.0 million-person mark between 2010 and 2020.

Merrick Garland’s problems with his son-in-law just got worse

Over the last few months, as COVID brought classrooms into American homes, parents learned that their children are being taught Critical Race Theory (i.e., Whites are evil; Blacks are pathetic) and magical thinking about gender, as well as being forced to wear masks that don’t protect against disease, but do interfere with children’s health, learning, and socialization. Their vigorous complaints saw the National School Board Association suggest they’re “domestic terrorists” and Merrick Garland answer the call. We learned, too, that Merrick Garland’s son-in-law, through his company, Panorama Education, sells CRT materials to public schools. And yesterday, it turned out that Panorama is also spreading material calling Trump and his supporters “white supremacists.”

Merrick Garland shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near questions about what’s happening in America’s public schools. His conflict of interest is overwhelming, given that his daughter’s financial well-being is dependent on peddling the same racist material America’s parents, both Black and White, rightly find deeply offensive. Add in the racist partisan attacks and Garland can only be seen as further politicizing an office that exists to serve all Americans, not just Democrats.
