The description of the accident sounds like steering control arm disconnect/failure. Those things do happen as accidents on rate occasions. But it could also be sabotage (weaken the arm so that it will ultimately fail). You can’t really predict when a sabotaged steering system would fail or how it will behave when it does but, when it does fail, you would get that sort of uncontrolled veering off to one side as a result.
Sort of like the CIA Medicine Bottle assassination technique described by G. Gordon Liddy in his book “Will.” Eventually, the target will take the poisoned pill but there was no predicting exactly when the event would occur and always the possibility the wrong person would “accidentally” be poisoned
There was no mention of any other passengers in the car, so I assume that one of the police officers detailed to the cartoonists personal protection was driving.
