An easier path back to sanity is to strengthen states’ rights.

A better solution is the establishment of city states. Give big cities unlimited powers of taxation and regulation, within city limits. That is a fate worse than having a nuclear bomb go off.

The Founders solution was for people to ultimately vote with their feet. That is happening to some degree (local joke here in TX is “will the last person in CA please turn out the lights”) but the commies are trying federalize everything to thart solution.

“An easier path back to sanity is to strengthen states’ rights.”

That’s true, but a state’s right to secede is the ultimate right from which all other rights descend. Without that right, a state has no bargaining power.

Perhaps the idea of secession is only considered “unthinkable” because people fear that any move to secede will inevitably lead to another tragic Lincoln War to squash it.

If the federal government just let it happen without bloodshed, the two countries thus formed could theoretically co-exist as neighbors, and even learn from each other’s policy successes and failures.

Really, your idea of strengthening states rights and the idea of secession are not that different. After all, one of the most important state’s rights is….the right to secede.

You are correct. The Federal government has become too strong. The Feds are source of the problem.

I agree. More decentralization/more states rights is exactly what is needed. Alabama should be free to be Alabama and Vermont should be free to be Vermont within the framework of the constitution.

The problem is that while those of us on the Right will agree with that, that is anathema to those on the Left. They want more centralized power. They want power over others. Giving up the chance to exercise power over others is not something they will ever agree to unless it comes with a very credible threat that trying to exercise that power over others will result in those others not only fighting back but likely winning or doing massive harm to them.

That and abolish the Department of Education, thank you Jimmah you bastard, and END TENURE. Or even easier yet, just enact a tax credit for education for k-12 and let the parents have the cash to spend on the school of their choice.

Could you imagine how fast schools would correct themselves if the parents controlled the money rather than multiple bureaucratic agencies!

I completely agree. Fact is I do think the southern states had the right to secede back in the 19th century, but I’m really glad they didn’t. This country strength is in its size. And that matters in an ever more dangerous world. However if it becomes the bad guy all bets are off.

America is controlled by the City States that in turn exert control over the former states in which they reside. In today’s America, states rights no longer have the effect they once might have had

But the cowards in the GOP, who always go along to get along, will never attempt to strengthen states' rights. Why, that would make them like antebellum Southerners!

I'm in that number favoring secession. Otherwise we all go blue, or head that way and be conquered by China, without a shot fired.

That would be true if we could shift power back to the states, where it belongs. I no longer believe this is possible.

Restore the rights the stats currently have, then Red and Blue will eventuate.

Splitting the country is a sane choice... voluntarily and peacefully.

I would normally agree with you. I would say that states’ rights allows each state to set its own community standard that is consistent with its culture, history and values. I would say it relieves tension in the society by allowing people to move to a state whose culture and values and laws best suits them without requiring someone to leave the country entirely to escape feeling oppressed by the other side.

BUT

Decentralized power, States’ rights is anathema to the Left. They specifically seek control over everybody else’s lives. They will never be happy with anything less.

Therefore the only peaceful outcome as I see it is separation. Otherwise we are going to have a very bloody civil war because there is no way in hell I am going to lay down and allow Leftists to trample on me, deny me my constitutional rights, impose their twisted sense of morality on me, etc.
