You have not seen the AR steel plate that lines the walls under the sheet rock.

Reminds me of a doctor & his wife, that I met in New Mexico years ago. They lived in a nice house, built in the 1950s or 1960s. After buying the place & moving in, they discovered that all of the exterior walls had sheet steel inside: apparently the original owner had it built that way, hoping the steel would slow down or stop radiation, if we got into a nuclear war. Don't know if that would work or not, but the doc did mention that it made hanging pictures on those walls a giant pain in the @ss...

Hardly an insurmountable problem. Picture-hanging molding has been used in plaster-walled houses for a long time in America.
