VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — Lithuanian cybersecurity experts are urging the country’s government agencies to abandon the use of Chinese-made smartphones after an investigation identified security vulnerabilities and censorship concerns with certain devices.
Lithuania’s National Cyber Security Center said it found four major cybersecurity risks for devices made by Huawei and Xiaomi, including two relating to pre-installed apps and one involving personal data leakage, and warned against using these two brands.
There’s also the risk of possible restrictions on freedom of expression with Xiaomi phones, which contain a content-filtering feature for 449 keywords or groups of keywords in Chinese characters. The center warned the function could be activated at any time and did not rule out the possibility that words using Latin characters could be added. According to the Lithuanian report, apps receive updated lists of censored words and phrases and are capable of blocking them.
The phrases include “Free Tibet,” “Voice of America,” “Democratic Movement” and “Long Live Taiwan Independence.” Although the content-filtering feature was disabled and no censorship was performed on the phones the Lithuanian center inspected, the center warned the function could be activated at any time.

Relying of a communist country for telecom … what could go wrong?
Heck I thought they were ALL made in china.
The Chinese also probably gave Russia backdoors into Lithuanian Heweii devices.
I go with the assumption that every state agency around the globe is reading as I type right now. I just care less than less.
We make and design the chips!
We design the chips!
We buy everything but provide services!
Do you want fries with that?
Back in the day a group of Russians visited Moscow and all shared the same room in the hotel. They were soon drinking, talking, telling political jokes, laughing, and generally making a lot of noise.
One of them eventually wanted to sleep, so he asked the others to be quiet, but they kept going.
Finally he got an idea. He went out of the room and told the attendant to bring him a tea, but wait for a couple of minutes with it.
Then after returning he said to his friends: “Shut up, this room is under surveillance.”
They laughed.
Then he lifted a corner of the carpet and said: “Bring me a cup of tea, please.”
Suddenly, the attendant shows with the tea.
They were all are stunned and shut up instantly.
In the morning, the guy woke up to an empty room.
He asks the attendant: “What happened to all my comrades?”
“Oh, the NKVD took them all away! And, by the way, comrade Major really enjoyed your carpet trick!”
Thank you for that. Nice to know Mrs. Vtwin and I have phones not made in china.
